Sci-Fi sometimes predicts with amusing "accuracy" :-)
Apple is developing the next version of the Apple Silicon processor, the M4. It's rumored to be their first CPU specifically designed for AI workloads. This is all well and good, but they should tread carefully when they reach the M5, at least according to a 60's prediction in Star Trek (Original series, "The Ultimate Computer", Season 2, episode 24).
Star Trek posits that the "M5 Thinks", warning about the dangers of AI becoming "too human" -- capable of paranoia and murder, followed by guilt and even suicide. It's interesting how these hypothetical moral and ethical dilemmas involving AI, imagined in the 60's, are gradually seeping into reality. It's clear that we will have to grapple with these issues in the near future, and not just in our fiction.
