On the ServiceNow CIS-Discovery (CIS-DISCO) exam, two domains carry 70% of the marks, and one of them is Discovery Pattern Design. Here is why a weak pattern score is so hard to make up elsewhere, and a practical way to study patterns.
The four official domains
These come from ServiceNow’s Certified Implementation Specialist – Discovery (CIS-DISCO) Mainline Exam Blueprint, marked “Updated November 2025”.
| Exam domain | What it covers (from the blueprint) | Percent of exam |
|---|---|---|
| Discovery Pattern Design | Patterns; identification and connection sections; troubleshooting | 35% |
| Discovery Configuration | Includes Discovery troubleshooting: Discovery errors, duplicates and credentials | 35% |
| Configuration Management Database (CMDB) | CI identifiers; reconciliation definitions; data source precedence; CMDB de-duplication | 15% |
| Discovery Engagement Readiness | Topics including Discovery dashboards and benefits, and the Discovery solution: business value, definition and positioning | 15% |
Why two domains dominate
Pattern Design and Configuration are worth 35% each, so together they carry 70% of the exam. The other two domains are worth 15% each, so even perfect scores there cover only 30% of the exam.
The blueprint says your result is compared with a predetermined cut score that “is not publicly shared and is not always 70%”. There is no safe number to aim for, so the safest plan is to be strong in both big domains.
How a weak Pattern Design score drags down the total
Here is an illustration, not a pass or fail prediction. It assumes each domain counts in line with its weight.
| Domain | Weight | Example score |
|---|---|---|
| Configuration Management Database | 15% | 100% |
| Discovery Engagement Readiness | 15% | 83% |
| Discovery Configuration | 35% | 73% |
| Discovery Pattern Design | 35% | 41% |
Weighted together, those scores give a total of about 67%. The perfect CMDB score adds only 15 points, while the weak Pattern Design score adds about 14 out of a possible 35. Lift Pattern Design to 55%, with everything else unchanged, and the total rises to about 72%. Each 10-point gain in Pattern Design is worth 3.5 points overall; the same gain in CMDB is worth 1.5.
How to study patterns
- Walk through an existing pattern. Take a pattern that already exists and go through it step by step, asking what each step collects and why.
- Know identification from connection sections. ServiceNow’s documentation explains that identification sections find and identify a CI, and connectivity (connection) sections then find that CI’s outgoing connections.
- Practise troubleshooting a failing pattern. Troubleshooting appears in Pattern Design and again in Discovery Configuration, so it counts in both big domains. When a pattern fails, work out which step failed and why.
- Use the official course. ServiceNow recommends Discovery Fundamentals. Its objectives include extending horizontal Discovery with custom infrastructure and application patterns, and common troubleshooting techniques. ServiceNow notes that the instructor-led version contains labs and the on-demand version does not.
Before you book, remember that ServiceNow requires the CIS-Data Foundations (CMDB and CSDM) certification first. Always confirm the details on ServiceNow’s official CIS-DISCO exam blueprint.
