A powerful climate phenomenon is developing across the Pacific Ocean, and US forecasters are warning that it could become one of the strongest El Niño events recorded in more than 75 years. According to the US Climate Prediction Center, there is an 81% chance that the current El Niño will reach the “very strong” category and rank among the largest events recorded since 1950.
El Niño occurs when ocean temperatures across the central and eastern equatorial Pacific become significantly warmer than normal. In recent observations, sea surface temperatures have risen at least 1°C above average, with some areas of the eastern Pacific reaching an extraordinary 2.7°C above normal.
The effects of a strong El Niño can extend far beyond the Pacific Ocean. Changes in ocean temperatures and atmospheric circulation can influence rainfall, drought, storms, temperatures and wildfire risks in different parts of the world. The Climate Prediction Center expects the current event to strengthen through the end of 2026, with a 97% probability that it will continue into early spring 2027.
India is already facing important consequences. Reduced rainfall and extreme heat can place pressure on water resources and electricity supplies. Hydroelectric generation has reportedly fallen sharply compared with the previous year, while other sources of electricity have had to compensate for rising demand caused by intense summer temperatures.
Australia could also face increased drought and wildfire risks, while parts of the southern United States may experience cooler and wetter winter conditions. El Niño can also influence hurricane activity by increasing wind shear in the Caribbean, potentially disrupting developing tropical storms.
However, scientists emphasize that even a very strong El Niño does not produce identical weather conditions everywhere. Its influence depends on geography, atmospheric patterns and other climate factors. What it does provide is a shift in the probability of certain extreme weather outcomes.
With virtually no expectation of La Niña returning in early spring and only a small chance of the Pacific returning to normal conditions, the coming months could be particularly important for governments, businesses, farmers, energy companies and communities preparing for changing weather patterns.
