Getting laid off taught me that experience doesn't guarantee you can interview well.
I was four years into a backend role at a mid-size SaaS company in Austin when the calendar invite titled "Quick sync" showed up. By lunch, I was one of 60 people let go.

How I actually used it (and why that matters)
AI helped me prepare. The interviews were all me.
I set one rule: practice only. Every evening I ran a mock round, solved it myself first, then compared my approach and asked why the AI's version was better. I rehearsed behavioral answers out loud using the STAR format until I stopped rambling.
That rule matters. Most US employers and platforms like HackerRank and CodeSignal treat hidden AI help in a live interview as cheating, and detection keeps improving. Getting caught can mean a rescinded offer and a burned bridge in a small industry.
