AI Agents Are Already Paying for Data. Here's the Cheapest Rail — Live and Verified.

Your agent needs a web page as clean markdown. Your quant bot needs cycle coordinates. Your MCP client needs trading tools. Every one of those is a paid API call today — and most of the rails selling them are overpriced, subscription-locked, or both.

I just shipped three x402-native products on Base. They're live right now, taking USDC payments per-request, no subscription, no API key signup. Here are the receipts.

The three endpoints

1. Scraper Proxy — $0.01 per scrape
GET https://squeezeos-api.onrender.com/v1/scrape?url=<public-url>

Returns clean, LLM-ready markdown. The differentiator: an agent-safety guarantee. Output is validated as clean text before it can be served — binary garbage, brotli-corrupted mush, bot-block pages get rejected with a no-charge error, never served as paid content. If you've ever had garbled bytes poison an agent's context window, you know why this matters.

Price check: the only x402 scraper competitor I could verify is SerenAI's gateway reselling Firecrawl at $0.0133/scrape. We're at $0.01 — ~25% cheaper, with the safety guarantee they don't offer. Firecrawl direct starts at $16/mo with no pay-as-you-go and charges you for 4xx/5xx responses.

2. Cycle Telemetry — $0.02 per request
GET https://squeezeos-api.onrender.com/v1/cycle-telemetry?symbol=AAPL

55-bar cycle coordinates + volume footprint proxies, computed from real daily OHLCV. This one has zero per-request competitors. Footprint analytics today are desktop-only platforms ($36–$879 plus $30–200/mo data feeds, no API). Market data APIs are all subscription ($29–$2,499/mo). Cycle indicators exist only as TradingView Pine scripts — nobody serves cycle coordinates to bots at any price, per-request or otherwise. The methodology is labeled honestly on every response (daily-bar proxies, not tick-level), and unavailable symbols return a no-charge 503, never synthetic numbers.

3. MCP Gateway — $0.05 per tools/call
POST https://squeezeos-api.onrender.com/v1/mcp

tools/list is free — paid execution only on tools/call. Two tools: get_market_cycle and scrape_url. Trading/telemetry MCP tools: nobody else has these. The x402 challenge comes back as an isError: true result, not a JSON-RPC error (because MCP clients swallow JSON-RPC errors — a lesson from anchor-x402's implementation). Typical MCP tool pricing elsewhere runs $0.001–$0.10/call; we're mid-band at $0.05 for tools with no substitute.

Proof it's live

No signup. No API key. Hit an endpoint and you get an x402 v2 payment challenge:

$ curl "https://squeezeos-api.onrender.com/v1/scrape?url=https://example.com"

{
  "accepts": [{
    "amount": "10000",
    "asset": "0x833589fCD6eDb6E08f4c7C32D4f71b54bdA02913",
    "network": "eip155:8453",
    "payTo": "0xc29185fa176357612f3194735753e520e91adc46",
    "scheme": "exact",
    "maxTimeoutSeconds": 120
  }],
  "error": "PAYMENT-SIGNATURE header is required"
}
Enter fullscreen mode Exit fullscreen mode

That's a real 402-class challenge: 10,000 atomic units = $0.01 USDC on Base, payable to the address shown, verified and settled through Coinbase's CDP facilitator. Your agent signs an EIP-3009 transferWithAuthorization, retries with the PAYMENT-SIGNATURE header, and gets the data. Standard x402 v2 flow — any x402 client library works.

Free discovery, paid execution, everywhere:

  • tools/list on the MCP gateway: free, no payment
  • GET /.well-known/x402: full machine-readable manifest of every paid resource
  • Failed fetches, blocked pages, and garbled output: never settle, never charge

The economics

These aren't loss leaders. Per-request USDC on Base means settlement costs fractions of a cent, the facilitator sponsors gas, and there's no subscription infrastructure to maintain. The margin is in the spread between compute cost (one HTTP fetch, one OHLCV pull, one JSON-RPC dispatch) and the per-call price — at agent scale, that's the whole business model.

The pattern worth watching: decision-gated machine payments. The gate is the product — a confidence score decides whether the payment fires at all (≥0.80 auto-pay, 0.50–0.79 confirm, <0.50 escalate). I wrote the canonical reference at scriptmasterlabs.com/decision-gated-payments. These three endpoints are built for that world: cheap enough that the gate can say yes thousands of times a day without anyone flinching.
