Mount Backblaze B2 as a Windows Drive Letter for 5.5

Backblaze B2 Without the Sync App

Backblaze B2 is 6 dollars per terabyte per month. It is the cheapest object storage with a real track record. The B2 sync app works, but it eats your local disk and only mirrors what fits on your machine.

Mount B2 as a Windows drive letter and you skip the sync. B: drive. Open files in any app, edit in place, save back. No sync, no cache, no upload button.

The WebDAV Trick

B2 does not have a public WebDAV endpoint, but Cloudflare R2 and Wasabi do. If you use B2 for cold storage, you already know the price. If you want it to act like a Windows drive, ScsDriver talks to it through any WebDAV-compatible front end (Cloudflare R2, MinIO, B2 with a custom WAF rule). For most users, the path of least resistance is mounting the WebDAV-compatible sibling.

Mount B: in 60 Seconds

  1. Set up your WebDAV-compatible front end (Cloudflare R2 with a public bucket and a Workers script, or MinIO with WebDAV gateway enabled).
  2. Install ScsDriver and open it.
  3. Server: your front-end URL. Username and password: from your bucket token.
  4. Pick a drive letter. B: is the obvious choice.
  5. Click Connect. B2 is now B:.

What Works on B:

  • Stream 50 GB video files in DaVinci Resolve without downloading first.

The Free Tier Caveat

B2 gives you 10 GB free. Mount that as B: drive and you have 10 GB of streaming cold storage for free. That is enough for 5,000 photos, 100 hours of compressed video, or 2 years of monthly backups. The first 10 GB is always free. The mount tool stays the same.

A Final Note

Backblaze B2 is the cheapest object storage with a working API. The B2 backup product (unlimited backup for 7 USD per month) is a different product. Mounting B2 as a drive is for the 6 USD/TB/month object storage tier, not the consumer backup tier.
