Mount Cloudflare R2 as a Windows Drive Letter for 5.5

Cloudflare R2 Without the Sync App

Cloudflare R2 is the cloud object store that charges zero egress fees. 10 GB free per month, then $0.015 per GB per month for storage, and zero for downloads. Compared to AWS S3, R2 saves you the AWS data transfer tax that hits every time you read a file.

Mount R2 as a Windows drive letter and you skip the AWS console, skip the rclone dance, and get a real drive. R: drive. Open files in any app, edit in place, save back. No sync, no cache, no upload button.

The WebDAV Trick

Cloudflare R2 does not ship native WebDAV, but every bucket is reachable through S3-compatible API. Mount R2 via a WebDAV-to-S3 bridge. The cleanest setup is rclone serving WebDAV on localhost, with ScsDriver pointing at http://127.0.0.1:8080. Rclone handles the S3 signing, ScsDriver handles the drive letter.

ScsDriver is a one-time fee:

  • Monthly: $1.5 (cancel any time)
  • Yearly: $5.5
  • Lifetime: $5.5 (single payment, yours forever)

That is not a typo. The lifetime plan costs the same as the yearly plan.

Mount R: in 5 Minutes

  1. Get your R2 account ID and create an API token with object read/write.
  2. Install rclone and run rclone config to add a new S3-compatible remote pointing at R2.
  3. Run rclone serve webdav R2-bucket-name: --addr :8080 to expose the bucket as WebDAV on localhost.
  4. Install ScsDriver and open it.
  5. Server: http://127.0.0.1:8080
  6. Username and password: any string. rclone serve webDAV does not validate by default.
  7. Pick a drive letter. R: is the obvious choice.
  8. Click Connect. R2 is now R:.

What Works on R:

  • Open 1 GB log files from R: in Notepad++. Edit in place, save back. No download, no upload.
  • Mount R2 alongside S3, Backblaze B2, or any other WebDAV mount. ScsDriver supports multiple drives at once.
  • Cold storage: R2's infrequent access tier costs $0.01 per GB per month, and downloads are still free. Mount a 1 TB cold bucket as R: and you have 1 TB of streaming cloud storage for $10 per month, zero egress.
  • Static assets: R2 is the storage layer behind Cloudflare Pages and Workers. Mount your Pages assets as R: drive and edit them from File Explorer without going through the Cloudflare dashboard.

Why R2, Not S3

AWS S3 is $0.023 per GB per month for storage, plus $0.09 per GB for egress. R2 is $0.015 per GB per month, plus zero egress. For a 1 TB bucket with 500 GB of downloads per month, S3 costs $23 storage + $45 egress = $68 per month. R2 costs $15 storage + $0 egress = $15 per month. R2 saves you $53 per month on the same workload.

Pair R2 with ScsDriver at $5.5 lifetime, and you have a working cloud drive for $20.50 once, total. That is less than a single month of S3 plus rclone plus rclone WebDAV server.

Pricing Math

The monthly ScsDriver plan is $1.5. After 4 months you have paid $6. The lifetime plan is $5.5. From month 5 onward, the lifetime plan is free.

If you keep the tool for 6 months, lifetime saves you 50 cents per month. Over 5 years, lifetime saves you $90.

Zero Egress, Real Impact

The zero egress number is the headline. If you serve 10 TB of downloads per month from S3, that is $920 in AWS egress fees. From R2, the same 10 TB is $0. R2 is the only major cloud object store that does not charge for downloads. Mounting R2 as a drive makes that pricing model usable from File Explorer, not just from the API.

A Final Note

Cloudflare R2 is the cloud object store that does not charge for downloads. Pair it with rclone's WebDAV server and ScsDriver's drive letter, and you have a working cloud drive for $5.5 once. Mount your R2 today: https://drive.scsoi.com/
