ownCloud as a Windows Drive Letter for 5.5: The Original Self-Hosted Mount

ownCloud is the original self-hosted file sync and share platform, predating Nextcloud by a few years. The projects share a common ancestor, and a lot of the same WebDAV paths work for both. If you self-host ownCloud, ScsDriver mounts it as a Windows drive letter for $5.5 once.

Why Mount ownCloud?

ownCloud exposes WebDAV at https://your-owncloud.example.com/remote.php/webdav/. The path is slightly different from Nextcloud, but the ScsDriver setup is identical: point it at the WebDAV URL, use an app password, pick a drive letter.

Once mounted, the drive behaves like a local disk. You can:

  • Open files in any application without first downloading them
  • Drag-and-drop uploads directly into your ownCloud
  • Use Windows Search to find files across your ownCloud instance
  • Stream large files without syncing them to local disk

ownCloud vs. Nextcloud

ownCloud is more conservative. The release cadence is slower, the feature set is more focused, and the support model is enterprise-first. Nextcloud is more aggressive — more apps, more features, faster releases. If you have an existing ownCloud install, the migration cost to Nextcloud is non-trivial, and the upside may not be worth it. ScsDriver treats both identically.

For 95% of self-hosted cloud use cases, ownCloud does the job. Mounting it as a drive letter removes the browser detour for the other 5%.

The 5.5 Lifetime Deal

$5.5 once, every WebDAV endpoint you point it at, forever. Mount ownCloud as O:, Nextcloud as N:, MEGA as M:, pCloud as P: — same license, same client, same lifetime.

If you self-host multiple services, this is the only mount client you need. The $1.5 monthly option exists for those who'd rather pay-as-they-go, and the yearly is $5.5 — same as lifetime for the first year.

Caveats

ownCloud's WebDAV implementation is solid but not perfect. If you have very large directories (10,000+ files), the initial mount can be slow. After that, file access is fast. If you use ownCloud's external storage feature, the WebDAV path exposes the mount, but the access controls come from ownCloud, not the underlying storage — same as the web UI.

For typical home and small-business use, mounting ownCloud via ScsDriver just works.

Bottom Line

You own the server, you own the data. Mount it as a drive, work on it like a local disk. $5.5 once.
