The Inbox Rule: Why 3 Folders Are Enough to Keep Your Note System from Collapsing

Most note systems fail not on the idea but on the structure: too many folders, too
many rules, too much maintenance. After two weeks the collection is there — and nobody
dares to touch it anymore. The counter-movement is radically simple: everything
lands in an inbox first, and just three folders handle the rest.

The 3-folder rule:

• 00_Inbox — the entry basket. Every note, every thought, every
  forwarded link lands here. No sorting while capturing — sorting only costs focus.

• 06_Daily — the daily notes. This is where the red thread is spun:
  what mattered today, what is coming tomorrow. Five minutes in the evening are enough.

• 07_Templates — the templates. Daily note, project note, permanent
  note. They turn a loose note into a reusable structure without you having to think it
  through from scratch every time.

Everything else is optional. Topic hubs, zettelkasten logic, complex tagging — all of
that can be added later, once your system is running. In the beginning only one
thing counts: that you create another note tomorrow without being afraid of your own
system.

Why this works: The inbox lowers the barrier to entry to zero
(capturing is always allowed), and a fixed processing time — for example 17 minutes a
day — keeps the basket from overflowing. That is no coincidence: it is the same
mechanism as an email inbox. What has a clear one-way path stays empty and therefore
usable.
