You're making sales. But are you actually making money?
Most Etsy sellers don't realize they're losing money on every order until they add up all the fees.
The Hidden Fee Trap
Etsy charges you for:
- Listing fee: $0.20 per item (renews every 4 months)
- Transaction fee: 6.5% of the sale price
- Payment processing: 3% + $0.25 per transaction
- Offsite ads: 15% if the buyer came from an Etsy ad
Example: You sell a handmade candle for $25.
| Fee | Amount |
|---|---|
| Listing | $0.20 |
| Transaction (6.5%) | $1.63 |
| Payment (3% + $0.25) | $1.00 |
| Total fees | $2.83 |
Your "profit" from a $25 sale? $22.17. But what did the candle cost you to make?
If materials $8, shipping supplies $3, your time $5... you're making $6.17. That's a 24.7% margin. Not great.
Now imagine you priced it at $18 "to be competitive." Margin drops to 3.7%. You might as well work for free.
The 40% Rule
Healthy Etsy businesses aim for 40%+ profit margins after ALL fees and costs. Below 20%? You need to raise prices, cut costs, or stop selling that item.
