SEOCode Update 1.6.8: Adult Product Labels, EEA Free Listings, and Local Business Search Units

Version 1.6.8 adds three new checks that cover recent Google changes, and at least one of them could get your products removed from Google if you miss it.

New Checks

Adult products must be labeled in product feeds

Severity: Critical

Google now requires that adult products be clearly labeled in your product feed. A product feed is a file you send to Google that lists all the products you sell, with details like price, description, and images. Google uses this file to show your products in Shopping results.

If you sell adult-oriented products and you do not label them correctly in that feed, Google can remove your product listings or penalize your whole account in Google Merchant Center. Google Merchant Center is the tool where you manage your Shopping listings.

This is separate from a check we already run that looks for adult labeling in your page's structured data. Structured data is code on your web page that tells Google what kind of content is on it. That check still runs. This new check is specifically about the feed file you send to Google, which is a different place and a different requirement.

What you should do: If you sell adult products and you submit a product feed to Google, check that every adult product in that feed is labeled as adult content. If you are not sure how to do this, your developer or your feed management tool can help.

Free product listings are gone in Europe

Severity: Warning

Google used to show free Shopping results in European countries. These are product listings that appear in Google Search without you paying for an ad. Google has now removed these free listings from search results across the European Economic Area, which covers most of Europe including EU countries, Norway, Iceland, and Liechtenstein.

This change is likely connected to new European laws that regulate how big tech companies like Google must behave in digital markets.

If your business sells to customers in Europe and you were getting visitors from those free Shopping results, that traffic is now gone.

What you should do: If Europe is an important market for you, you have two main options. You can run paid Google Shopping ads to keep your products visible. Or you can focus on regular search results by making sure your product pages are well written and easy for Google to understand. Both approaches take time and money, so it is worth talking to your marketing team about which makes more sense for your business.

Local businesses can now appear in aggregator and supplier search units

Severity: Info

Google has expanded two types of search results to include local businesses. These are called aggregator units and supplier units.

An aggregator unit is a group of results that pulls from a platform like Yelp or TripAdvisor. If someone searches "restaurants near me", Google might show a block of results from one of those platforms. A supplier unit shows individual businesses directly. Both of these now support local business searches.

This is good news if you run a local business like a restaurant, a plumber, or a salon. It means you have more chances to show up in Google Search results.

To be eligible, two things need to be in order. First, your web page needs correct LocalBusiness structured data. This is code on your site that tells Google you are a local business, what type of business you are, your address, your hours, and so on. Second, you need a verified Google Business Profile. That is the free listing you can set up at business.google.com, which is what shows your business on Google Maps and in local search results.

What you should do: Make sure your Google Business Profile is set up and verified. Then ask your developer to check that your website has correct LocalBusiness structured data. SEOCode already checks for this, so you can run a scan to see if anything needs fixing.
