🚨 MCP's new roadmap identifies the right problems—but most of the fixes are still ahead.

The Model Context Protocol is moving beyond simple tool connections.

Its latest roadmap focuses on some of the problems that emerge when MCP is used by long-running, cloud-hosted agents:

Workload and agent identity
Progressive tool and resource discovery
Long-running tasks
Server-initiated events
Transport unification
SDK and conformance improvements

Some important foundations have already shipped, including stateless server scaling and several authorization improvements.

However, the roadmap also makes an important distinction: many of the proposed features do not have delivery dates yet, and some of the working groups responsible for them are still forming.

This article looks at what MCP has already shipped, what remains proposed, and what developers building agent infrastructure should consider today.
