This started as a small user-facing problem and turned into a product decision.
“Bright indirect light” sounds precise until you walk around a room trying to decide whether a shelf counts as bright. My eyes adjust too quickly, so a corner can look fine even when it is much darker than the window.
What GrowBook does
GrowBook reads the ambient light sensor available on many Android phones and shows the value in lux. I use it to compare locations at the same time of day: window ledge versus desk, desk versus bookshelf. That comparison is more useful than treating one reading as a universal truth.
The boundary I kept
Phone sensors differ, cases can block them, and some devices do not have the sensor at all. The app says when the hardware is missing instead of leaving a spinner on screen. It is a practical clue, not professional horticultural equipment.
Try measuring the brightest and darkest plant spots in your room. The gap may be larger than it looks.
