8 Languages, 1 Codebase: Practical Localization Lessons from Mailfo Android

8 Languages, 1 Codebase: Practical Localization Lessons from Mailfo Android

Building utility apps for a global user base requires thoughtful localization (i18n). For Mailfo, an Android disposable email client, supporting 8 languages from day one expanded our global reach significantly.

Supported Languages:

English, Hindi (हिंदी), Arabic (العربية), French (Français), Spanish (Español), German (Deutsch), Portuguese (Português), and Turkish (Türkçe).

3 Critical Lessons Learned:

1. Plan for RTL Early

Arabic requires mirror-flipped layouts and careful handling of LTR token strings (like email addresses and 6-digit OTP codes) inside RTL sentences.

2. Flexible UI Containers

German and French translations are frequently 25-35% longer than their English counterparts. Hardcoded button widths or fixed heights break layouts immediately.

3. Localized App Store Metadata

Localizing your app title, short description, and screenshot text drives far more organic installs from non-English speaking markets than UI translation alone.
