The Complete Kyoto Guide — How to Experience the Ancient Capital to the Fullest, Area by Area, with the Experiences You Absolutely Can't Miss

Introduction

Kyoto is "the soul of Japan" itself.

An ancient capital with 1,200 years of history. 17 UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Over 2,000 shrines and temples. The sound of wooden geta sandals on cobblestone alleys. The aroma of matcha. The sight of a maiko.

If Tokyo is "Japan's present," Kyoto is "Japan's soul."

But Kyoto is vast. With so many things to see, it's hard to know where to start. Read this guide and you'll know exactly which areas to visit, what to experience, and how to plan your route.

1. The Big Picture — Area Map & Getting Around

The key to Kyoto sightseeing is dividing the city into areas.

Five main areas:
| Area | Character | Key Spots |
|------|-----------|-----------|
| Higashiyama | The classic Kyoto. A treasure trove of temples | Kiyomizu-dera, Fushimi Inari, Gion |
| Arashiyama | Nature and bamboo. Kyoto's western gem | Bamboo Grove, Togetsukyo Bridge, Tenryu-ji |
| Kinkaku-ji Area | Famous temples in the northwest | Kinkaku-ji, Ryoan-ji, Ninna-ji |
| Kyoto Station Area | The gateway. Excellent access | To-ji, Kyoto Tower |
| Gion & Kawaramachi | Downtown and the geisha district | Hanamikoji, Nishiki Market, Pontocho |

Getting around tips:

  • Bus 1-Day Pass (¥700) — Unlimited city bus rides. The standard for Kyoto sightseeing
  • Subway — Two lines: north-south Karasuma Line and east-west Tozai Line
  • Taxi — Convenient for moving between areas. Starting fare about ¥500
  • Rental bicycle — Flat Kyoto is ideal for cycling. ¥1,000–1,500 per day
  • Walking — Best option in the Higashiyama area. Sometimes faster than the bus

Local advice: Kyoto buses get severely stuck in traffic during autumn foliage season (November). Subway plus walking is often faster. Especially in the Higashiyama area, walking is the way to go. Kiyomizu-dera → Yasaka Shrine → Gion can all be covered on foot.

2. Higashiyama — Walking Kyoto's Golden Route

Higashiyama is Kyoto's most popular area. Here alone, you can experience half of what makes Kyoto special.

Kiyomizu-dera:

  • Kyoto's most famous temple. The view from the "Stage of Kiyomizu" is breathtaking
  • Otowa Waterfall — Choose one of three streams to drink from. Blessings for academics, love, or longevity
  • Gates open at 6 AM. First thing in the morning is best
  • The special nighttime autumn illumination is a must-see

Fushimi Inari Taisha:

  • World-famous for its thousands of vermilion torii gates stretching to the mountain summit
  • The hike to the top takes about 2 hours. You can turn back at any point
  • Open 24 hours. Early morning or evening is least crowded
  • The most popular tourist spot in Japan among foreign visitors

Yasaka Shrine & Gion:

  • The symbol of Gion. The heart of the Gion Matsuri festival
  • Hanamikoji — A cobblestone street lined with traditional machiya townhouses. You might even spot a maiko
  • Gion at night is magical. The soft glow of paper lanterns is beautiful

Model route (full day):

  1. Early morning at Fushimi Inari (6:00–8:00) → 2. Kiyomizu-dera (9:00–10:30) → 3. Stroll Ninen-zaka & Sannen-zaka slopes → 4. Yasaka Shrine → 5. Gion & Hanamikoji → 6. Dinner in Pontocho

Local advice: Fushimi Inari is absolutely best visited early morning. At 6 AM, you can have the thousand torii gates almost entirely to yourself. During the day it's packed and difficult to even take a photo. The silent torii gates at dawn are a once-in-a-lifetime memory — only for those who wake up early.

3. Arashiyama — Kyoto's Bamboo and Natural Beauty

Arashiyama is a nature-rich area on the western side of Kyoto.

Must-see spots:

  • Bamboo Grove — A magical path lined with towering bamboo reaching toward the sky. One of Kyoto's most iconic landscapes
  • Togetsukyo Bridge — The symbol of Arashiyama. A beautiful harmony of mountains, river, and bridge
  • Tenryu-ji — A UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Sogenchi Pond Garden is among Kyoto's finest
  • Sagano Romantic Train — A scenic railway running through the Hozu River gorge. Spectacular during autumn foliage
  • Arashiyama Monkey Park — Interact with wild Japanese macaques. The summit also offers a panoramic view of Kyoto

Food spots:

  • Arashiyama yudofu (tofu hot pot) — A Kyoto specialty. The silky texture of Saga tofu is exceptional
  • %ARABICA Kyoto Arashiyama — Coffee with a view of Togetsukyo Bridge
  • Arashiyama shopping street — Street food: matcha sweets, warabi mochi, croquettes

Model route (half day):

  1. Bamboo Grove (first thing in the morning) → 2. Tenryu-ji → 3. Togetsukyo Bridge → 4. Street food on the shopping street → 5. Sagano Romantic Train (advance reservation recommended)

Local advice: Visit the Bamboo Grove before 8 AM. During the day, it overflows with people and becomes a "people grove" rather than a bamboo grove. In the early morning, sunlight filtering through the bamboo creates a magical tunnel of light.

4. Kinkaku-ji & the Northwest — Kyoto's Grand Temples

Kyoto's northwest is home to some of Japan's most celebrated temples.

Kinkaku-ji (Temple of the Golden Pavilion):

  • A three-story pavilion covered entirely in gold leaf. Kyoto's most iconic building
  • The "inverted Kinkaku" reflected in the Mirror Pond (Kyoko-chi) is the perfect photo spot
  • Best visited early in the morning. The gold shimmers differently depending on the angle of light
  • Kinkaku-ji covered in snow is a miracle that occurs only a few times per winter

Ryoan-ji:

  • Home to the world-famous dry landscape rock garden. 15 stones arranged in a mysterious composition
  • The garden is designed so that all 15 stones are never visible from any single angle
  • Sitting quietly and contemplating the rock garden is the essence of Kyoto

Ninna-ji:

  • Famous for its Omuro cherry blossoms. Late-blooming sakura (mid-April)
  • A UNESCO World Heritage Site with the prestige of a former imperial palace

Model route (half day):

  1. Kinkaku-ji → 2. Ryoan-ji (15-minute walk) → 3. Ninna-ji (10-minute walk) → 4. Bus back to Kyoto Station

Local advice: Kinkaku-ji → Ryoan-ji → Ninna-ji is known as the "Kinukake-no-Michi" (Silk Road of Kyoto) walking route. A golden itinerary that covers three World Heritage Sites in half a day. Arrive at Kinkaku-ji when it opens at 9 AM for the best experience.

5. Gion & Kawaramachi — Kyoto's Food and Nightlife

Gion and Kawaramachi form Kyoto's largest downtown district.

Must-see spots:

  • Nishiki Market — Called "Kyoto's Kitchen," this 400-year-old market street offers tastings of pickles, yuba, and matcha sweets
  • Pontocho — A narrow alley along the Kamo River lined with restaurants. In summer, dine on kawadoko (riverside platforms over the Kamo River)
  • Hanamikoji — Gion's main street. Lined with tea houses and traditional restaurants
  • Kamo River — Kyoto's symbol. Famous for the sight of couples sitting at perfectly even intervals along its banks
  • Shinkyogoku & Teramachi-dori — Covered arcade shopping streets for souvenirs and street food

Food spots:

  • Nishiki Market — Kyo-yasai pickles, dashimaki tamago, yuba croquettes, matcha sweets
  • Pontocho kawadoko — May to September only. The luxury of dining over the Kamo River
  • Gion matcha sweets — Tsujiri, Saryo Tsujiri. Authentic matcha parfaits from the source

Model route (evening):

  1. Nishiki Market street food (4:00 PM) → 2. Stroll Hanamikoji → 3. Yasaka Shrine → 4. Dinner in Pontocho → 5. Walk along the Kamo River

Local advice: Pontocho kawadoko dining is an experience unique to Kyoto. Budget ¥5,000–15,000 per person. Reservations recommended, but casual spots accept walk-ins. Dining while feeling the breeze off the Kamo River becomes a highlight of your entire Kyoto trip.
