DEV·TV just got a new channel: Community Spotlight. It's a slot on the TV set aside for other people's projects, hand-picked, no payment, no algorithm. It's my way of giving something back to the developer community that made DEV·TV's launch what it was.
The first project to run on it is MERK, a free, open source IRC client built by Dan Hetrick, one person building the tool they actually wanted to use. That's the kind of project this channel exists for.
What Community Spotlight actually does
When MERK's entry comes up on channel 11, it shows:
- Project name, tagline, and description
- Credit to the developer
- A direct link to the repo or site
- If it's a GitHub project, the README renders right there in the TV's reader
Anyone featured gets a personal link that opens the TV tuned straight to their entry, so there's something concrete to share, not just "check out channel 11 sometime." MERK's is live now, credited to Dan Hetrick, linking back to nutjob-laboratories/merk.
How it works, if you want in
Send a project. If it's a fit, it airs on DEV·TV next to GitHub trends and Hacker News. It's free, curated by hand, and open to open source projects, side projects, and weekend builds, GitHub repo or plain website, both work.
Details go to devtv.developers@gmail.com: project name, a one-line tagline, a short description, your name or handle, your link, and up to five tags. A demo video is optional.
