Slick started as an experiment to build a search engine from the ground up and understand what happens behind the search box. While working on crawling, indexing, ranking, and retrieval systems, we discovered how complex the modern web really is. Slick is an independent search engine focused on customization, privacy, and giving users more control over how they find information.
Our stack
Slick is built with a combination of modern web and search technologies. Our crawler is written in Python and handles discovery, fetching, and processing web content. Search is powered by Elasticsearch with BM25 retrieval, vector embeddings, and machine learning reranking. The platform uses Node.js for backend services, along with custom ranking systems, APIs, and a lightweight frontend.
