Hail, Wind, and Storms: What Really Threatens Your Solar Panels

If you're holding off on solar because you're worried a hailstorm will wreck your investment, the data says you're probably more protected than you think but not invincible.

What Panels Are Actually Rated For

Most Tier 1 solar panels are certified to withstand hail up to 25mm (1 inch) in diameter at high wind speeds. Some premium panels go further — certain LONGi models are tested to handle hailstones up to 65mm without cracking. The tempered glass covering most panels is built to flex under impact, not shatter, which is why typical hailstorms rarely cause visible damage.

When Storms Actually Cause Problems

Damage risk goes up with larger hailstones, wind-driven debris, or falling branches during severe weather these can crack glass, damage cells, or dislodge mounting hardware. High winds are a separate risk from hail entirely. A properly installed system is engineered to regional wind-load standards, but severe storms can still loosen hardware or, in rare cases, tear panels loose if the installation wasn't done to code.

What Actually Protects You

Two things matter more than luck: panel quality and installation quality. Most panels carry manufacturing defect warranties, and homeowners insurance often covers storm damage the same way it covers other roof damage though it's worth confirming your specific policy actually includes this before you assume you're covered.

Storm resilience comes down to your panel's hail/wind rating and your insurance fine print, not the storm itself.
