How to Open a Bank Account as a New Oleh: Israeli Banks vs. Discount Brokers 2026

Originally published at Aliya Today

The myth most new olim hear is that they can delay banking with traditional Israeli institutions and use discount brokers or fintech platforms instead. This is wrong, and waiting costs you time, money, and your integration benefits. Within days of making Aliyah, you must schedule a meeting with Misrad Haklita to discuss your Sal Klita, and they will ask you to hand in documentation from an Israeli bank showing your account details so they can start depositing monthly payments. Without a live Israeli bank account, you cannot receive government support, salary transfers, or housing assistance payments.

Why a Real Bank Account Comes First—Before Any Investment Platform

Discount brokers and digital investment platforms are not banks. They cannot receive government transfers. If you have made Aliyah or hold an Israeli residency permit, you can usually apply for a standard account at a traditional bank. You need to make a deposit—cash or check—into your new account to activate it, as Misrad Haklita is unable to transfer Sal Klita payments to an inactive account.

Many new olim make the mistake of thinking they can open a brokerage account or digital fintech platform on day one and worry about the bank later. You cannot. The bank comes first.

What Documents You Must Bring to the Israeli Bank

You must bring your Teudat Zehut and Teudat Oleh (and if you don't have a Teudat Zehut yet, your Teudat Oleh should suffice). You will also need your passport, proof of address, and a minimum deposit amount (usually between 50–500 NIS, depending on the bank).

Certain branches have more experience assisting olim and offer service in multiple languages; some branches also work closely with absorption centers and ulpan programs, meaning staff are more experienced and the process is more structured. Choosing the right branch matters more than you might think.
