VoiceOfCustomer: Turn Customer Reviews into Actionable AI Insights

Hacktoberfest Open-Source AI Challenge Week 2: Side Hustle Submission 💸

This is a submission for the Hacktoberfest Open-Source AI Challenge Week 2: Side Hustle

What I Built

VoiceOfCustomer is an AI-powered customer feedback analytics dashboard that helps businesses understand what customers are saying without manually reading hundreds of reviews.

It analyzes customer feedback and turns it into structured insights, including sentiment analysis, key findings, recurring pain points, recommended actions, and positive highlights.

The goal is simple: help businesses spend less time sorting through feedback and more time improving their products and customer experience.

Key Features

  • Sentiment Analysis: Categorizes customer feedback as positive, neutral, or negative.
  • AI Executive Summary: Generates a concise overview of the feedback dataset.
  • Key Findings: Highlights important patterns and customer concerns.
  • Recurring Pain Points: Identifies common issues mentioned in customer reviews.
  • Recommended Actions: Suggests practical improvements based on the feedback.
  • Positive Highlights: Surfaces customer appreciation and product strengths.
  • CSV Import: Upload customer feedback datasets for analysis.
  • CSV Export: Export feedback data for further review.
  • Interactive Dashboard: Explore feedback through summary cards, charts, and sentiment breakdowns.

Who Is It For?

VoiceOfCustomer can be useful for:

  • Small businesses that want to understand customer satisfaction.
  • E-commerce sellers who receive product reviews.
  • Product managers looking for recurring issues and improvement opportunities.
  • Customer experience teams analyzing customer feedback.
  • Startups that want to make data-informed product decisions without manually reviewing every comment.

The application is designed to make customer feedback easier to understand and act on.

Code

GitHub Repository:
https://github.com/SoundaryaKoutharapu/VoiceOfCustomer

The project uses React and Vite for the frontend, Node.js and Express for the backend API, Recharts for visualizations, and Google's Gemma model for AI-powered feedback analysis.

The repository contains the project source code and implementation details.

How I Built It

The project uses the following technologies:

  • React and Vite for the interactive frontend.
  • Node.js and Express for the backend API.
  • Recharts for data visualizations.
  • Google's Gemma model for AI-powered feedback analysis.
  • CSV processing to help users analyze customer feedback datasets.
  • Render for deployment.

The backend sends customer feedback to the Gemma API and processes the response into insights such as an executive summary, key findings, recurring pain points, recommended actions, positive highlights, and limitations.

I initially explored local inference with Ollama and an open-weight model before integrating Gemma through Google's API for the deployed version.

This project helped me explore the practical challenges of building an AI application beyond the model itself: structured outputs, API integration, frontend-backend communication, deployment configuration, and presenting AI-generated results in a useful interface.

System Architecture

A Technical Challenge I Faced

One challenge was turning AI-generated responses into reliable, structured information that the frontend could display consistently.

A response that sounds helpful in plain text is not always easy for an application to process. The backend therefore needs to handle the model response carefully and validate the expected structure before returning the results.

I worked on prompting the model to generate structured output and connecting that output to the dashboard's different insight sections.

This helped me understand that building an AI application involves more than calling a model API. Reliable data handling, error management, and a useful user interface are equally important.

Why Does Open Innovation Matter?

Open innovation makes AI experimentation more accessible to developers, students, and small teams. Open-weight models allow developers to explore how AI works, experiment with different deployment approaches, and build applications for practical problems.

For VoiceOfCustomer, this means the AI layer can evolve as better models and deployment options become available. The application can focus on its core purpose: making customer feedback useful without being permanently tied to one model implementation.

I also explored local inference during development, which helped me understand the trade-offs between running models locally and using a hosted API.

Prize Categories

  • Best Use of Gemma: Using Google's Gemma model for AI-powered customer feedback analysis.
  • Best Use of a .tech Domain: Deploying the project at https://hima-stack.tech.
  • Best Use of Render: Using Render to deploy the project.

These are the categories I am considering for my submission, subject to the official challenge eligibility requirements and deployment setup.

What's Next?

I'd love to hear feedback on VoiceOfCustomer, especially ideas for improving the analysis, making the insights more actionable, and supporting additional feedback sources.

If you find the project useful, please consider starring the GitHub repository or sharing suggestions through issues.

Thanks for checking out VoiceOfCustomer!
