A research app can summarize a document quickly. The useful engineering question is whether the reader can carry the evidence into the next session. This post proposes a small export format for that handoff; it is a design example, not a claim that any particular app already implements it.
Begin with the reader’s task
Someone comparing a stock market analysis application may want to track a company, read an update and return later to the same question. StockTool.AI publicly describes saved-stock lists, AI summaries and insight history. Those features provide a useful context for thinking about portable research notes, but the export described here is an independent example.
Separate source fields from interpretation
A minimal note could contain the company identifier, document title, document date, reporting period, source URL, research question and reader comment. Keep extracted text in its own field. A model-generated interpretation should never silently replace the quoted material.
{
"company": "EXAMPLE",
"question": "What changed during this reporting period?",
"source_url": null,
"document_date": null,
"reporting_period": null,
"source_excerpt": null,
"ai_summary": null,
"reader_note": "Source not attached yet",
"review_state": "needs_source"
}
The null values are intentional. Unknown dates should remain unknown, rather than inheriting the export date. Otherwise a fresh download can make old information look current.
Validate the handoff, not the investment outcome
Before exporting, check whether a source URL exists and whether the date fields describe the document or the period covered. Preserve both when they differ. Show a visible warning if a source is missing. Do not treat a successfully generated summary as a successfully verified fact.
For imported notes, retain the original identifiers and distinguish newly added reader comments from the earlier version. A simple version field and export timestamp help explain how a note changed without implying that the underlying company information changed too.
Keep the interface modest
A useful empty state says “Add the original document” rather than inventing a confident answer. A useful completed state makes the document and unanswered question easy to reopen. This is a small usability improvement, but it helps prevent context from disappearing between sessions.
