$28K $7.5K/month: How we cut our cloud DB costs by 70% in 3 months

TL;DR: Our 6-person dev team cut our cloud bill from $28K to $7.5K/month (a 73% reduction!) in 3 months by re-architecting to serverless and optimizing database usage, after initial attempts at tweaking failed.

Our small 6-person dev team just managed to cut our monthly cloud bill from $28K down to $7.5K in just three months. That's a whopping 73% reduction. Honestly, we were staring down some serious cloud bill shock, and something had to give.

For a while, we were just trying to optimize our existing setup. You know, scaling down instances, tweaking database configs, trying to squeeze every last drop out of what we had. But it was a nightmare. We spent almost a month on it, and the best we got was maybe a 10% reduction for a ton of effort. It felt like we were just moving deck chairs on the Titanic.

So, we hit a wall. Hard. Turns out, trying to optimize a fundamentally inefficient architecture is a fool's errand. We realized we needed a more radical approach. We decided to dedicate about 1.5 months to re-architecting some of our core services, even though it meant slowing down feature development for a bit. It was a tough call, but we knew it was the only way.


Here's the thing: we went all-in on serverless for our backend services using AWS Lambda and SQS where it made sense. Our Next.js frontend was already pretty lean, but we really focused on optimizing our PostgreSQL 15 database usage – things like proper indexing, query optimization, and moving less frequently accessed data to S3. We also implemented strict cost checks in our GitHub Actions CI/CD pipelines. The trade-off was definitely that initial development time and a bit of a learning curve for some of the team, but it paid off massively. We found that specs are cheaper than debugging inefficient cloud resources.


The results speak for themselves, obviously. Our bill is now consistently around $7.5K, and our performance hasn't suffered. But I'll be honest, this approach isn't a magic bullet and it's not for everyone. If you're running a huge legacy monolith, a full re-architecture might be too costly or complex. It really helped that we were a relatively small, agile team open to new paradigms. We're still figuring out the best ways to monitor these new serverless costs, but the initial impact is huge.
