Every app either wants your data or your money. I built 5 that want nothing.

Most apps today have the same deal. Give us your bank login. Give us your data. Pay every month to use your own stuff.

I did not like that. So I built 5 open source tools that ask for nothing. No bank login. No data stored. No monthly fee.

Here is what they do.

1. SubZero - Find every subscription in your bank statement

This is for the $219 per month problem. On average people pay $219 for subscriptions but think they pay $86. They forget what they signed up for.

What you can do with it:
You upload your bank statement as a PDF or CSV. It finds all the recurring charges. Netflix, Spotify, Adobe, AWS, and many more. Also local services like JazzCash, Daraz, Foodpanda.

Why it is good:
It does not need Plaid. It does not log into your bank. There is no database and no account. Your file is read in memory and then gone. It uses 8 different checks in parallel and has 500 plus vendors built in, so it works even without internet. You can also upload two months and it will tell you what got more expensive, what is new, and what you cancelled.

2. Mirage - Frontier models for free in one endpoint

AI APIs are expensive and they go down a lot. Also every provider has its own API and its own billing. If you want to use 5 models, you need 5 keys.

What you can do with it:
You can use latest model of ChatGPT, Gemini, DeepSeek, Qwen, Mistral and Meta AI through one OpenAI compatible endpoint. It uses the free internal APIs that your browser already uses. So you log in once in your normal browser and Mirage uses that session. No API keys. No per token cost.

Why it is good:
One binary. No Docker, no Node, no Python needed. It has session pooling, rate limiting, circuit breakers, and real browser fingerprints so you do not get blocked. If OpenAI is down you can switch to Gemini in the same request. It also supports tool calling, file upload, web search and streaming.

3. Nexus Engine - From fresh OS to ready in one command

Setting up a dev machine takes hours. Ubuntu uses apt, Arch uses pacman, Fedora uses dnf, Alpine uses apk. Your script works on one and breaks on the rest.

What you can do with it:
You can set up any Linux machine with one command. It detects your OS, picks the right package manager, and installs everything from a simple YAML profile. It has 10 profiles ready, like Go dev, Rust dev, frontend, data science, gamer, ethical hacker. On Windows you can run one command to get WSL2 ready in 60 seconds. It also manages your dotfiles and has an encrypted vault for secrets.

Why it is good:
It is one static Go binary with zero dependencies. It works on any distro. It has a 7 step flow with auto rollback. If one important package fails, it removes everything it installed, so you do not get a half broken system. Every command goes through a security gate, so no random shell code runs. It also has a hardware ledger to check if your hardware is known to work.

4. Scam Intelligence Network - One API to check any kind of scam

To check one bad link you need VirusTotal, AbuseIPDB, URLhaus, URLScan, WHOIS. To check one email you need Have I Been Pwned, EmailRep, IPQualityScore. That is 12 different APIs, 12 keys, 12 formats.

What you can do with it:
You can check URLs, emails, phone numbers, and crypto addresses with one POST request. It tells you if a link is phishing, if an email was in a breach, if a phone number is a robocall, if a crypto wallet is linked to scams.

Why it is good:
It has 1.43 million local threat records that are checked in under 10ms. If it matches locally, it skips all network calls. If not, it calls 10 plus external sources in parallel. It has a verdict engine with weighted scoring, circuit breakers so one API down does not break the rest, and SQLite caching. It also has optional LLM analysis. You can self host it with Docker on 1GB RAM. It is MIT licensed.

5. Grasper - A reading companion that makes you actually understand

We read hard books about physics, math, engineering, CS and we forget most of it the next day. Summary apps like Blinkist tell you WHAT a book says but not HOW it works. ChatGPT can help but it has no reading flow and no check.

What you can do with it:
You open your own PDF, EPUB, or TXT book. It shows you one page at a time in a clean reader. You click explain and it teaches you that page from first principles, with what it is, why it matters, a worked example, common wrong ideas, and a short study card. It renders math properly, it explains diagrams with a vision model, and it asks you 5 questions. You only move to the next page when you understand this one. You also get a chat per page and a grasp ledger that remembers what you learned.

Why it is good:
Your book stays on your machine. Only the page you open is sent to the AI provider you choose, and you can even use a local Ollama model so nothing leaves your device. No account, no tracking, no cloud. All progress lives in a local SQLite file. It is built in Rust and Tauri, so it is fast and private.

All 5 are open source, free, and private by default. If you are tired of apps that want your data or your money, try one. Star it if you like it, open an issue if it breaks.

Which one would you try first?
