Introduction
The Muladhara chakra, often referred to as the root chakra, is the foundational energy center of the human body. It is the first of the seven major chakras, and its activation is crucial for spiritual seekers to awaken the dormant Kundalini energy.
In this blog post, we delve into the exquisite details provided by Shlokas 4 to 13 of the Shat Chakra Nirupanam, a Sanskrit text that explores the physical attributes, associated deities, activation techniques, and benefits of the Muladhara chakra.
Benefits of Activating Muladhara Chakra
According to Shloka 13, meditating on the Muladhara chakra, which shines with the brilliance of ten million suns, grants several profound benefits:
Mastery over Speech: One gains absolute control over speech (vak).
Universal Knowledge: One enjoys the fruits of all knowledge (sarva vidya).
Eternal Health: One experiences perpetual health (arogyam).
Supreme Bliss: One attains extreme pleasantness (mahnanda).
Inner Purity: One becomes pure within (shuddha shIlah).
Divine Communion: One gains the ability to worship all Gods and Gurus with beautiful poetry, thereby attaining the fruits of spiritual practice (sadhana).
Description of Muladhara Chakra
Location and Structure:
Verse 4 describes the Muladhara chakra as located below the genitals (dhwaja adhah) and above the anal outlet (gudordhvam).
It is a four-petaled lotus (chatuh shona patram) associated with the sounds vam, zam, sham, and sam. These sounds, when chanted with a golden light visualization (suvarna abha), activate the chakra.
Seed Sound (Bīja Mantra):
Verse 5 introduces the seed sound (bija mantra) of the Muladhara chakra as "lam," associated with the Earth element.
This sound, visualized as shining yellow (pita varnam) with the brilliance of lightning (tadid), further energizes the chakra.
The chakra is surrounded by eight tridents (shulas) representing the eight directions.
Deities of Muladhara Chakra
Masculine Energy:
Verse 6 describes the masculine aspect as a child form of Lord Brahma.
This divine child, riding on Airavata (the elephant vehicle of Indra), possesses four shining arms and the wealth of all four Vedas.
Interestingly, the bija mantra of both the Muladhara chakra and Indra is "lam."
Feminine Energy:
Verse 7 introduces Dakini, the feminine energy associated with the Muladhara chakra.
She is depicted with four beautiful arms, red eyes, and radiating the light of many suns.
Dakini is the carrier of the revelation of the ever-pure intelligence (shuddha buddhih).
Other Components of Muladhara Chakra
Vajra Nadi and Tripura:
Verse 8 describes a channel called Vajra Nadi, near the mouth of which resides a beautifully luminous triangle known as Tripura.
Kandarpa Vayu:
Within the Tripura, resides the aspect of vayu (wind) called Kandarpa, a deep red color.
This wind aspect is vital for life and is associated with intense energy.
Svayambhu Shiva Linga:
Verse 9 describes Svayambhu Shiva in his Linga form, located within the Tripura.
This Linga is golden, faces downwards, and is revealed through knowledge (jnana) and meditation (dhyana).
It has the shape and color of a new-born leaf.
This form of Shiva, also known as the self-existent one, resides in Kashi and within the Muladhara chakra like a swirling whirlpool of energy.
Kundalini Energy:
Verse 10 introduces the dormant Kundalini energy, coiled three and a half times around the Shiva Linga.
She is as fine as the fiber of a lotus stalk and attracts the entire world.
Her shining snake-like form covers the Brahmadvara with her mouth.
Her brightness is likened to a strong flash of young lightning.
Properties of Kundalini Energy
According to Verse 11 of the Shat Chakra Nirupanam, the Kundalini energy possesses the following properties:
Sweet Sound: Her voice, or reverberation, is likened to a distant hum of a swarm of love-mad bees.
Inspiration for Arts and Literature: She is the inspiration behind various beautiful arts, poetry, and literature.
Life Force: She maintains all beings by creating the duality of inhalation (shvása) and exhalation (ucchvása), essentially sustaining the life force.
Radiant Energy: She shines in the cave of the root lotus like a series of brilliant lamps, symbolizing her intense energy and potential.
