Swipe Again for Swipe Again

The Polite Machine

Automation has a bedside manner whether its builders chose one or not. A system that retries at 3 a.m., emails in all caps urgency, and cancels without a closing word has a manner — a rude one, executed at scale, in the merchant's name, while the merchant sleeps. The machine's politeness is not a soft feature layered over the real work. At volume, the manner is the product's public behavior.

Politeness, engineered, is a set of refusals: never attempt while a fix is in progress, never send a message that cannot change the outcome, never let a deadline pass without the closing courtesy of saying so. Plus a set of habits: confirm what worked, thank without groveling, state the next step in the customer's language. None of it is expensive. All of it is load-bearing, because the customer cannot separate the machine's manners from the merchant's character.

Swipe Again is built as a polite machine on purpose — the recovery flow treats every automated touch as a representative sent into someone's day. Scale does not excuse rudeness. It compounds it, or compounds the opposite.
