Swipe Again for Swipe Again

The Save Offer Is a Price Signal

When a subscriber reaches the cancel flow, a save offer is usually read as a retention tactic. Read it instead as pricing information arriving at the last possible moment. The size of the offer confesses what the seller believes the subscription is worth keeping for; its timing — offered only at the exit, never before — confesses something about what full price was buying. Customers learn both lessons instantly, which is why sloppy deflection trains the audience it keeps.

An honest offer avoids the confession problem by being defensible in daylight: a pause for someone whose life is temporarily loud, a fix for the thing actually broken, a discount whose logic can be said out loud. If the offer would embarrass the pricing page, it should not be in the cancel flow either — subscribers compare notes, and the story travels further than the save.

Swipe Again builds one branded save offer into the cancel flow and leaves the exit one click away, on the theory that a subscriber who stays should stay for a reason that survives being repeated. Retention bought with confusion is churn with a forwarding address. Retention bought with a fair signal compounds.
