πŸ‘» Ghost Shell: A Haunted Terminal Powered by Local AI | Hacktoberfest 2026

This is a submission for the Hacktoberfest Open-Source AI Challenge Week 4: Ghost in the Machine.

What I Built

What if your terminal remembered everything you deleted?

I built Ghost Shell, an AI-powered haunted terminal that brings the spirit of Halloween and DΓa de los Muertos into everyday development.

Powered by Google's open-weight Gemma model running locally through Ollama, Ghost Shell reacts to terminal commands with short, eerie messages.

Features:

  • Ghost Whispers: Get spooky AI-generated reactions after executing commands.
  • SΓ©ance Mode: Ask the ghost questions about your terminal history.
  • Digital Graveyard: Preserve deleted files and Git branches with AI-generated epitaphs.
  • Ofrenda: Generate a beautiful digital altar remembering everything you've deleted.
  • Custom Personas: Change the ghost's personality.
  • Model Benchmarking: Compare local model performance.

The idea was simple: even deleted files deserve a story.

How I Built It

Ghost Shell uses an entirely local AI architecture.

Technology Stack:

  • AI Model: Google Gemma 3 (gemma3:1b)
  • Local Inference: Ollama
  • Backend: Python 3.9+
  • Shell Integration: Bash and Zsh
  • Frontend: HTML and CSS
  • Testing: Python unittest with mocked Ollama responses

The shell hook captures executed commands and their exit codes. Python communicates with the local Ollama instance to generate contextual responses.

Everything runs locally without requiring an external AI API.

Why Does Open Innovation Matter?

Open innovation made Ghost Shell possible.

Using an open-weight model through Ollama gave me:

  • Privacy: Terminal history stays on the user's machine.
  • Offline AI: No internet connection or paid API required.
  • Freedom: Developers can switch models and customize ghost personas.
  • Transparency: Anyone can inspect, modify, and contribute to the source code.

This project demonstrates that creative AI experiences don't need expensive APIs or centralized infrastructure.

The Spirit of It

The most interesting part of this project is the digital graveyard.

Imagine deleting an old project branch and seeing your terminal respond with an epitaph.

A forgotten file becomes a memory. A deleted branch gets a final story.

Ghost Shell turns an ordinary development workflow into something a little more mysterious.

Because in this terminal, nothing is truly forgotten.
