Why We Replaced Database-Driven Roles with PHP Backed Enums in Laravel

At Syftnex, we build complex, custom business systems, multi-tenant SaaS products, and bespoke admin panels using Laravel and FilamentPHP. One recurring friction point we faced across large-scale projects — including our multi-tenant Syftnex HR & Payroll platform — was managing roles and permissions.

The traditional approach in the Laravel ecosystem relies on database tables for roles and permissions. While powerful and highly dynamic, it introduces overhead for most standard applications:

  • Environment Syncing — You have to constantly run seeders across dev, staging, and production just to keep roles aligned.
  • Database Clutter — Simple role checks require database queries or aggressive caching strategies.
  • Brittle Typings — Checking for a role often involves passing hardcoded strings like $user->hasRole('admin'), which lacks IDE support and type safety.

The Zero-Migration Solution

We prefer future-proof, narrow, and honest architectures with a clear single source of truth. For most of our custom web development and SaaS projects, roles are static (e.g., Super Admin, Tenant Admin, Manager, Employee).

Instead of treating roles as data, we decided to treat them as code using PHP 8.1+ Backed Enums. We adopted a zero-migration approach, eliminating the need for role tables entirely. Enums live in the repository, sync naturally via version control, and provide strict, native type safety.

To standardize this architecture across our builds, we extracted our internal tool into an open-source package.

Introducing syftnex/laravel-role-enums

Currently available on Packagist at v1.2.1, syftnex/laravel-role-enums provides a robust infrastructure for managing roles via Backed Enums. Source is on GitHub.

Key Technical Benefits:

  • Zero Migrations — Forget the roles table. Your roles live entirely in your Enum classes.
  • Strict Type Safety — Catch role-assignment typos in your IDE before runtime.
  • TALL Stack Ready — Seamless integration with Laravel Livewire and FilamentPHP dashboards.

What's Next in v1.3.0

We're actively working on expanding this package to handle more complex access control scenarios. Planned for v1.3.0:

  • Comprehensive test suites and a dedicated SECURITY.md
  • Policy integration helpers to streamline Laravel's authorization gates
  • Multi-role support and an event system
  • An IDE helper command and a dedicated documentation site

When to Use Enums

If your end-users need to dynamically create custom roles and assign granular permissions through an interface, a database-driven approach remains the right choice. But for systems where roles are defined by business logic and managed by developers, PHP Enums keep the codebase exceptionally clean, fast, and reliable.

By prioritizing code over database clutter, you spend less time writing seeders and more time shipping core features.
