πŸ¦₯ VivaSloth AI: Your Calm AI-Powered Study Companion for Engineering Students

Hacktoberfest Open-Source AI Challenge Week 3: Slow and Steady Submission πŸ¦₯

My submission for the Hacktoberfest Open-Source AI Challenge Week 3: Slow and Steady.

πŸ’‘ What I Built

Engineering students often spend a lot of time preparing notes, understanding practical programs, organizing syllabus topics, and practicing viva questions.

Before exams and practical assessments, students may need to manage multiple resources, including textbooks, laboratory manuals, code files, screenshots, and class notes.

Switching between these resources can make studying stressful and time-consuming.

VivaSloth AI is an AI-powered study assistant designed to make engineering preparation easier, more organized, and less stressful.

Instead of spending hours arranging study material, students can use VivaSloth AI to prepare structured explanations, practice viva questions, create revision plans, and understand technical topics.

The goal is simple: Spend less time organizing study materials and more time understanding them.

VivaSloth AI follows one important idea:

Study smart. Stay calm. Move at your own pace. πŸ¦₯

Students can review the generated answers and compare them with their official syllabus and course notes.

πŸ—ΊοΈ Syllabus Map and Revision Planner

Helps students organize a large syllabus into smaller study goals.

A seven-day revision plan provides a simple way to decide what to study next.

🎀 Mock Viva Practice

Allows students to practice viva questions one at a time.

Students can review AI feedback, improve their explanations, and practice again.

πŸ’» Programming and Code Explanations

Helps students understand programming concepts, algorithms, and code-related topics using organized explanations.

πŸ“„ Study Material Support

Provides options to work with supported text, code, PDF materials, and readable screenshots, depending on the application's processing capabilities and the selected AI model.

🌐 Web-Based Study Workspace

Brings different study preparation tools into one browser-based workspace.

Students do not need to install a large AI model locally to use the hosted version.

VivaSloth AI provides AI-generated study assistance, not guaranteed correct academic answers. Students should verify important information using official course materials and teachers' guidance.

The project is intended to be publicly available for developers and students who want to explore its implementation, understand the application structure, or contribute improvements.

πŸ› οΈ How I Built It

VivaSloth AI uses a web-based architecture with a Python backend and a browser-based interface.

The project uses the following technologies:

🐍 Python: Handles backend application logic and AI-related requests.

🌐 HTML: Provides the structure of the study workspace.

🎨 CSS: Creates the interface, layouts, and visual styling.

⚑ JavaScript: Handles user interactions and communication with the backend.

πŸ”§ Flask: Connects the frontend with the Python backend.

πŸ€– OpenRouter API: Provides access to a selected AI model for generating study assistance.

☁️ Render: Hosts the deployed web application.

πŸ’» Git and GitHub: Support source-code management and project development.

The application is designed to turn study-related inputs into organized learning materials that students can review and improve.

AI generation requires an internet connection, and model availability depends on the selected provider.

πŸ”“ Why Open Innovation Matters

Open innovation makes AI development more accessible to students and independent developers.

It allows developers to explore different AI models, experiment with prompts, learn from open technologies, and build useful applications without creating a large AI model from scratch.

For VivaSloth AI, the purpose of AI is not simply to generate text.

It is used to make common engineering study tasks easier.

Accessible AI for Students

Many students do not have powerful computers capable of running large AI models locally.

Using hosted inference makes it possible to develop and access AI-powered study tools without requiring expensive hardware.

Flexible Model Integration

VivaSloth AI's AI integration can be adapted to different supported models.

This provides flexibility to experiment with open-weight models and improve responses as the project evolves.

Task-Focused AI

Instead of using one general chatbot for everything, VivaSloth AI organizes AI assistance around specific student needs.

Practical preparation, exam answers, syllabus planning, and viva practice each have a clear purpose.

Learning Through Open Technologies

Building this project helped me understand how frontend development, backend APIs, AI inference, and cloud deployment can work together in a practical educational application.

Open-weight model availability, licences, provider limits, and data-handling policies must still be considered.

The hosted version is not an offline AI application, and uploaded content may be processed by the external AI provider.

πŸ¦₯ How It Supports the Slow and Steady Theme

The theme Slow and Steady encourages developers to create AI tools that reduce unnecessary effort and make everyday tasks easier.

VivaSloth AI applies this idea to engineering education.

Students often repeat the same preparation tasks:

Searching through lengthy practical manuals.

Writing and organizing exam notes.

Separating important topics from the syllabus.

Preparing viva questions.

Planning revision before examinations.

Understanding unfamiliar code and technical concepts.

VivaSloth AI aims to reduce this repetitive preparation work.

A Simpler Study Workflow

Step 1: Open VivaSloth AI and select a study tool.

Step 2: Enter a topic, question, code example, or supported study material.

Step 3: Request a structured explanation, practical preparation pack, exam answer, or revision plan.

Step 4: Review the AI-generated material and verify important details.

Step 5: Focus on understanding, practicing, and improving instead of repeatedly organizing resources.

The result is a calmer and more focused approach to studying.

VivaSloth AI does not replace learning. It helps students spend more of their time actually learning.

That is what Slow and Steady means to this project.

🚧 Current Limitations and Next Steps

VivaSloth AI is an evolving project, and there are several areas I want to improve.

My planned improvements include:

Testing AI-generated answers across different engineering subjects.

Improving the accuracy of GTU-style answer formatting.

Making viva questions more relevant to individual topics.

Improving the usefulness of AI feedback during mock viva sessions.

Adding better support for uploaded academic materials.

Improving error handling when an AI model or API is unavailable.

Testing the interface across desktop and mobile browsers.

Improving privacy information and project documentation.

Exploring additional open-weight models for more flexible AI integration.

Making revision planning more personalized and useful.

AI-generated answers can contain errors, and free model endpoints may be unavailable or subject to limits.

Students should always verify academic information before using it in examinations or practical assessments.

πŸ“š What I Learned

Building VivaSloth AI helped me gain practical experience in combining web development with AI-powered functionality.

I explored how to connect a Python backend to a browser-based interface and use an external AI service for task-specific assistance.

I also learned that creating a useful AI application involves more than connecting an API.

A good AI application needs:

A clear problem to solve.

An easy-to-understand interface.

Well-organized workflows.

Useful AI prompts.

Reliable error handling.

Responsible treatment of user data.

Honest communication about limitations.

Most importantly, this project helped me understand how AI can support education by reducing repetitive preparation work while keeping the student responsible for learning.

🎯 Final Thought

Less stress. Better preparation. Smarter studying. πŸ¦₯

I built VivaSloth AI to explore how AI can help engineering students organize their work, prepare for examinations, and learn at a comfortable pace.

The aim is not to make students dependent on AI.

The aim is to make study preparation easier so students can focus on understanding concepts, practicing skills, and building confidence.

VivaSloth AI β€” Study Smart, Stay Calm.

I welcome feedback, suggestions, and contributions from the open-source community!
