MacBook Air M4 vs MacBook Pro M4: Which Should You Buy in 2026?

This is a summary of our full M4 MacBook comparison. Both laptops share Apple's M4 chip with a 10-core CPU and 16GB of unified memory as standard, so everyday speed is very similar.

The biggest difference is the display and cooling. The Air has a 13.6-inch Liquid Retina display at 500 nits and 60Hz, weighs 2.7 pounds, is fanless and silent, and is rated for up to 18 hours of video streaming, starting from $999. The Pro has a 14.2-inch Liquid Retina XDR display at up to 1600 nits peak with 120Hz ProMotion, weighs 3.4 pounds, uses active cooling to sustain full performance, adds HDMI and an SD card slot, and is rated for up to 24 hours, starting from $1,599.

Our verdict: for most people, the MacBook Air M4 is the better buy because it delivers the same M4 performance in a lighter, quieter and cheaper package. Choose the Pro only if you edit photos or video, grade HDR content, or regularly run long, heavy workloads where its display and sustained performance matter.
