When you put your heart into a post and it flops hard

𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐋𝐚𝐳𝐲 𝐆𝐢𝐫𝐥 on September 09, 2026

A buddy told me the other day, “Divya, making content isn’t just making content. Sometimes you literally throw your whole soul into it.” Hearing hi...

Sometimes, it’s simply not the right time. But sometimes, it’s just that the audience is smaller — and more engaged.

I’ve written articles that didn’t get many views, but generated a lot of thoughtful comments. And every comment was proof that someone had actually read the article all the way through.

Those views matter, too, no matter how few they are.

It's brutal when that happens, but don't treat a "flopped" post as a dead artifact!

When a deep-dive post doesn't get traction initially, it usually means the entry barrier was too high for a fast-moving feed. A few ways to give it a second life:

  • Refine the Title/Hook: Shift the headline from a broad subject to a specific problem or failure mode developers care about.
  • Break it into snippets: Take the strongest section, code snippet, or diagram and post it as a shorter standalone discussion prompt.
  • Cross-link it: Bring it up naturally as reference context when commenting on related topics across the community.

The effort you put into structuring the ideas is never wasted. It just needs a different door for readers to walk through. Keep at it!

I think your last reply — “Send a message!!” — is actually the most important line here. 😄

Views measure distribution, not necessarily value.

In software we see the same thing all the time. You can spend weeks building something technically beautiful and nobody notices it. Then some tiny thing you made in an afternoon suddenly gets all the attention. 😂

So I stopped treating attention as a quality metric a long time ago.

Build it. Publish it. Learn from it. Then build the next one.
Sometimes the audience arrives late. The important part is making sure there’s something worth finding when they finally arrive. 😉

I’m a big fan of your content, and I know I haven’t been able to keep up with it lately. Honestly, I feel really bad about it 😔 But I promise I’ll definitely catch up soon. ❤️

Hey, absolutely no reason to feel bad about that 😄❤️

You never owe a creator your attention. Read something when you genuinely have the time and curiosity for it — that means much more to me than someone reading just because they feel they should.

Besides… according to your own post, if my content gets ignored, I’m supposed to say “Whatever… come on, let’s make the next one,” right? 😂

So I’m just following your advice. 😉

It’s rare for things to work out from just one post. 😿

Especially as software engineers, I think the most important part isn’t just building something once. It’s continuously improving it over time.

“Whatever… come on, let’s make the next one.” ❤️‍🔥

That’s a mindset I want to keep with me too. 🚀

I totally relate. Sometimes if I share something that feels like a "whatever" post, It explodes. Other times, I'll spend days on something and no one sees it. I will never understand. 🤣

The painful part is spending 3 hours on a post, getting 17 views, then watching a random post you wrote in 30 seconds somehow take off.

Algorithms have the same sense of humor as production.

Good write-up.

Views do matter. We wouldn’t post if it didn’t! But different people deal with it differently.

And then there’s the different realities of platforms, algorithms, shadow bans, networking etc. it’s no longer about simply writing good content and then keep writing these days. But as I said, different people deal with it differently.

𝒯𝒽ℯ ℛℯ𝒶𝓁𝒾𝓉𝓎: Putting your soul into building and creating means low views will sting, and that's completely human. 🥺💧

𝒯𝒽ℯ 𝒯𝓇𝒶𝓅: Never let radio silence make you doubt your talent or tie your self-worth to a fluctuating view count. 📉❌

𝒯𝒽ℯ ℛℯ𝒶𝓁 𝒲𝒾𝓃: Algorithms change, but the courage to turn an idea into reality stays with you forever. ✨🛠️

I've been posting since before the World Wide Web, aaah, those were the days.

People are obsessed with views, don't worry about them.

At some point, something will happen that will hit you "right in the feelings," as you say.

This has happened a few times for me, and it mostly falls into two categories.

  1. You posted something that really helped someone, and they don't give a like, or a comment, or a share. They reach out, they get in touch with you because they want to say thank you. Then you know it was all worth it. I used to write money-saving articles, and people would get in touch to say how an article I'd written had made a huge difference to their finances and, therefore, their life; well, it made me cry.
  2. You posted something; it flopped, you forgot about it and moved on. Then suddenly, years later, someone finds it, comments, likes, shares, and suddenly that long forgetton post has found some love. Maybe only on a small scale, but it really is so nice when something you'd long forgotten about gets necro'd.

Enjoy what you do, and do it for yourself, and then you'll never fail.

Writing this from inside it rather than above it. I'm thirty-eight posts into a hundred, one a day, and plenty of them get reactions, which I am extremely happy about.

What the daily rhythm changed for me is that I can't afford to grieve each one. There's another tomorrow whether I sulked about today or not. Once a quiet post stops being a verdict and becomes just Tuesday, the weight shifts. The sting doesn't vanish, it just stops meaning anything about me.

And you're checking the score too early. The feed lasts a day, the archive is permanent. A good share of what a post is worth arrives months later, when somebody hits your exact problem at two in the morning and finds you through a search. No comment, no reaction. They fix their thing and close the tab. That happened, and you'll never see it. That is the joy and pride of doing this.

For what it's worth, this one clearly didn't flop. Look at the thread. ❤️

In my earliest days of browsing/ research I learnt so much from forums and blogs but never reacted, just learning. This is also a reason I just realized I'm here in DEV.to not every post must have a 100 likes or a single comment. Everyone has an audience quiet or applauding. Do you post to feel cool or send a message ?

"Because a creator’s real win isn’t just going viral. The real win is when you get zero views, feel completely crushed, and still look at yourself and say: 'Whatever… let's make the next one.'"

This right here. What a powerful, honest takeaway, Divya.

The courage to keep hitting publish after radio silence is the actual filter that separates people who dream of creating from actual creators. This post definitely didn't flop—it resonated deeply. Thank you for sharing! ❤️

Yeah sometimes it can just be coincidental, and not related at all to the quality of your post - I mean, so much content gets posted to a platform like dev.to, it can just happen that a post gets largely overlooked, lost amid the "noise" ...

Yeah, this really does happen, Divya, but I wouldn’t call it a fail either. Sometimes the post just doesn’t reach the right people at the right time, or the algorithm doesn’t push it, and there can be so many other reasons too. But whatever the reason, like you said, we just have to keep going and make the next one ❤️

Wow! I feel real views come when you stop doing it for views — or maybe when you stop worrying about views and likes, and care more about whether you're satisfied with what you shared.
