SpaceX has achieved a historic milestone: the first commercial cargo delivery to the lunar surface using its Starship rocket system.
The Mission
The uncrewed Starship "Odyssey" launched from Boca Chica, Texas, carrying 1.2 metric tons of commercial payloads including:
- A Japanese robotics company's lunar construction equipment
- Scientific instruments for a European Space Agency research station
- Communication satellites for a lunar internet network
The spacecraft performed a precision landing in the Mare Tranquillitatis region, approximately 3 km from the original Apollo 11 landing site.
Why This Matters
Previous lunar deliveries cost $1M+ per kilogram. SpaceX's Starship reduces this to approximately $50K/kg — a 95% cost reduction. This opens the moon to commercial enterprises that previously couldn't afford lunar access.
"We're not just visiting the moon anymore — we're building logistics infrastructure," said SpaceX VP of Commercial Space Laura Chen. "This is the FedEx of space."

What's Next
