What 45 novels taught us about genre labels

We run a small serial fiction platform. 45 novels in the catalog. Ask the genre menu what we publish and it answers fantasy, romance, action, sci-fi, in that order. Fantasy leads with 12. Romance follows with 6. Then a long tail of everything else: horror, slice of life, tragedy, historical, one litrpg, one fanfiction.

Ask the tags instead and a different catalog shows up. The most used tags across the same 45 novels are male lead, mature, multiple pov, serious, modern setting, slow burn, dark. Not one of those is a genre. Every one of them describes what reading the book actually feels like.

A writer of slow burn romance with a serious tone learns more from our tag list than from the fact that romance is our second genre. A progression fantasy writer learns the reverse: one litrpg novel in 45 means that audience reads elsewhere, no matter what the fantasy shelf says.

So the practical version, earned from counting rather than guessing. Before you pick a platform, ignore its genre menu for ten minutes and read its tags. Count which ones repeat. Then ask whether your book matches the tags, not the shelf. Platforms describe themselves by aspiration. Tags describe them by inventory.

The numbers are from our own catalog on 10 October 2026. 45 novels, 35 with published chapters. One platform, not the market.
