Sustainable approaches to tech from all angles have seen a massive boost in recent years. There’s an obvious reason for this: consumers are increasingly purchasing with climate change in mind.
Most sustainable tech developments are seen in the renewable energy sector, with great strides constantly being made to ensure that solar panels and wind turbines are much more accessible and functional for the average person.
With regards to smartphones specifically, though, the concept of a circular economy has seen a boost in popularity recently. Essentially, the idea is simple: once an item has been discarded by the first person to use it, it shouldn’t go to waste. Instead, it could be sold as a second-hand item, or it could be disassembled for the raw materials.
In turn, this puts less pressure on factories and mining operations to consistently pollute and process raw materials. With time, this could significantly reduce e-waste across the world.
Extended Reality
Since more and more people have access to a camera in their pocket at all times, the extended reality space will likely see a boost from 2025 onward.
This can already be seen with the increased demand for Meta virtual reality headsets: people are very interested in mixed-reality experiences. Mixed reality has been available for phones for many years, so it stands to reason that as demand increases, we will see an increase in the availability of mixed reality experiences via smartphones.
Wireless Charging
Wireless charging is an older technology than you might think, with basic devices making use of the technology since the eighties and nineties.
However, during those times, wireless charging was considered to be more of a novelty than a genuine use case. While the technology did work, it didn’t work quickly or efficiently enough to replace wired connections.
However, with each year that passes, wireless charging speeds are increasing. This means that it’s becoming a much more sensible idea over time, likely leading to mass adoption.
Some people believe that mobile phone manufacturers will phase out wired charging, removing all of the ports on a handset. Years ago, this would have seemed absurd, but with modern wireless charging circuits giving a phone adequate charge in as little as fifteen minutes, it’s much more believable. Combine this with the steady decline in popularity of wired headphones, and a phone with no ports seems to be coming quite soon indeed!
