I just wanted to point out that the GIT GUI app, on a Windows system at least, will launch upon an attempt to connect to a remote that requires with, like GitHub, and prompt you for a UN/PW combo. This will then be stored into the local credential manager for the logged in user so that future connections are authenticated properly, without creds being passed on the command line.
