I'm a php developer here. The whole point of wordpress is to be a platform for people who can't program. There's plugins out the yazoo and a lot of free ones are very good. The weirdest thing for me, is relying on plugins instead of developing the functionality myself.

I have checked out every other platform in the php space and the only one that came close to wordpress was pagekit, which was abandoned about a year after it was released which is really sad.

Default layouts for wordpress are retarded though and the best thing to do is write the CSS from the ground up to your specs or find a theme you like and tweak it.

I run my two wordpress blogs on a $7 linode instance so it's not expensive at all.. now with PHP being so much faster than in the 5.x days.

I agree that social media sites have really affected blogging negatively. I used to give my content to facebook and i feel like a fool for doing so, as there's no back referencing that content in the future. You get more attention in the moment... that's the only benefit.

Self hosting is a good idea.. it is the only way to own your content.

I'll check out that dev.to site, seems pretty cool ;)
