Day 19: Part 2 Jubilee Austen

Now it is time to finish the CSS. Today's post is part 2 of the current Skillcrush lesson review. Students wrap up the Jubilee Austen portfolio by adding styles to the remaining sections on the web page. It is also where you run your CSS code through the validator and double-check for any errors.

If you haven't finished any coding in part one, do this first. You can read about my experiences doing part 1 from last week's post. I also have a series here on DEV where I already built the entire portfolio in VS Code and walkthrough how to build the project step by step.

Reading the design documentation is still a challenge for me. It takes a lot more time these days to read through documentation so I have to review my code often to look for errors. I was mixing up the class names for certain CSS selectors so I put my HTML code next to the style sheet to help me check every class name I was using.

The HTML validator still says that I have errors in my code. However, CodeSandsBox makes it hard to fix a slash used in the html tag or what slash is being used in the link tag. I ended up ignoring these errors the most when I was using the validator.

What's New

After you finish your portfolio site, Skillcrush wraps up the lesson by encouraging students to retain what they have learned so far. This is why the quizzes are important because you can see what areas you need to improve and review more.

Learning any skill requires lots of repetition. That is how you keep everything you have learned. However, don't feel you need to memorize everything. That's why there are resources like cheat sheets and books available for all developers to use.

Tomorrow's Plan

The course itself is over with today's lesson. However, Skillcrush has a few more bonus projects Skillcrush students can do to get more practice with HTML & CSS. They also function as extra portfolio projects to new students and a chance to do things they will be doing again in projects they do for clients or on the job.

Tomorrow I'm tackling the first bonus project. This is still staying with the Jubilee Austen portfolio. However, this is where you turn a web page into a website. I will be using HTML & CSS to add another page and connect the two pages to make a website.

Skillcrush Resources

There are a ton of resources at the end of this lesson. Feel free to look at one or two. You can also check them all out.
