How Should Safety Shoes Be Maintained?

Safety shoes are designed to protect your feet at work, but they still need regular care to remain comfortable and effective. Proper maintenance can also help extend their lifespan.

Here are a few simple ways to maintain safety shoes:

  • Clean them regularly

Remove dirt, dust, mud, and other debris after work. For most safety shoes, a soft brush or damp cloth is enough. Avoid soaking the shoes unless the manufacturer specifically recommends it.

  • Let them dry naturally

If your shoes become wet, allow them to dry at room temperature. Do not place them directly next to a heater or use high heat, as this can damage the materials, adhesives, or protective components.

  • Check the soles

Inspect the outsole regularly for excessive wear, cracks, or separation. A worn sole can reduce grip and increase the risk of slipping, especially on construction sites or other demanding work environments.

  • Inspect the toe protection

Check the toe area for visible damage, dents, or deformation. If the protective toe cap has been seriously damaged, the shoes should be replaced rather than repaired or continued in use.

  • Keep the inside clean and dry

Remove the insoles when possible and let them air out separately. Wearing clean work socks and allowing the shoes to dry between shifts can also help reduce moisture and unpleasant odors.

  • Store them properly

Keep safety shoes in a cool, dry, and well-ventilated place. Avoid storing them in direct sunlight or in areas with excessive heat and humidity.

Finally, always follow the care instructions provided by the manufacturer. Different materials, such as leather, synthetic materials, and textile uppers, may require different cleaning methods.

Good maintenance does not make a damaged pair of safety shoes safe again, so regular inspection is just as important as cleaning. If the shoes show serious wear or damage, replacing them is usually the safer choice.
