Day 17/90: Lifetimes and lifetime annotations - Rust Engineering

Day 17/90: Lifetimes and lifetime annotations

90 Day Rust Challenge: Zero to Production

Today I wanted lifetimes and lifetime annotations to feel like a real engineering decision, not a syntax demo. The useful shift was making lifetimes and lifetime annotations readable in terms of ownership, borrowing, and lifetime boundaries.

The checks that mattered were which borrowed data must outlive what, how signatures communicate that constraint, and where owned data is simpler than another annotation.

The failure mode I was actively trying to avoid was fighting the borrow checker without first deciding which value should actually own the state. I wanted lifetimes and lifetime annotations to feel like something I could explain at a whiteboard or in a code review, not just something I recognized from docs.

That is the bar I want from this track: code that stays readable when requirements move, not just code that compiles today.
