Anthropic just raised $65 billion at a $965 billion valuation, leapfrogging OpenAI to become the world's most valuable AI startup. But here's what matters more than the headline number: Anthropic crossed $47 billion in annualized revenue by May 2026, up from $10 billion at the end of 2025.

That's not a typo. A company quintupled revenue in five months while maintaining product quality strict enough to delay their most capable model (Mythos) over safety concerns. This is the inflection point where AI stops being a science project funded by hyperscaler tax write-offs and becomes an actual business.

The timing of the Claude Opus 4.8 release alongside the funding announcement tells you everything about Anthropic's strategy. Opus 4.8 isn't a revolutionary leap—Anthropic themselves called it "a modest but tangible improvement." What it is is four times less likely to let flawed code pass without flagging issues, priced identically to 4.7 ($5 input / $25 output per million tokens), and shipping 41 days after its predecessor.
