For software engineers, data scientists, and tech professionals graduating from Canadian institutions, the post-graduation work permit (PGWP) is a critical bridge to permanent residence. Before you upload anything to the IRCC portal, verify these five items.
1. The 180-day clock starts when you complete your studies
You have 180 days after you complete your study program to apply for a PGWP. "Complete" means your school has confirmed you finished — normally your final marks or an official letter of completion, not the date of your convocation ceremony. If you wait past 180 days, you generally lose this one-time permit entirely. Mark the date your institution confirms completion, and count forward.
2. Language results are now mandatory for most applicants
If you apply on or after November 1, 2024, you must include proof of English or French ability with your PGWP application:
- CLB 7 (all four abilities) if you graduated from a university degree program (bachelor's, master's, doctoral).
- CLB 5 if you graduated from any other eligible program (college diploma, certificate, etc.).
- Accepted tests and score conversions are listed on IRCC's language results page. Order your test early — booking and results take weeks.
You are exempt from the language requirement if you submitted your study permit application before November 1, 2024. Check the submission date on your original application, not your permit's issue date.
3. College graduates: confirm your field of study qualifies
University degree graduates are not subject to a field-of-study restriction. Graduates of college-level programs must confirm their program appears on IRCC's eligible field-of-study list (grouped by CIP code) for PGWPs, with narrow exceptions for those whose study permit applications were submitted before November 1, 2024. Verify your program's CIP code against the current IRCC list before you pay any fees — a diploma from a designated learning institution does not by itself guarantee PGWP eligibility.
4. Know how long your permit should last
Current duration rules:
- Program of 2 years or longer: PGWP valid up to 3 years.
- Program of 8 months to under 2 years: PGWP valid up to the length of your program.
- Master's degree graduates: up to a 3-year PGWP even if the program was shorter than 2 years.
One catch many graduates miss: the PGWP cannot be issued past your passport expiry date. If your passport expires in 14 months, that caps your permit. Renew your passport before applying if it will expire soon.
5. Apply before your study permit expires
Your study permit stops being valid 90 days after you complete your studies, whichever comes first (permit expiry or that 90-day mark). Submit your PGWP application before your study permit expires — if you do, and you met the conditions to work off campus, you can generally work full time while your application is processed. If your permit has already expired, different restoration rules apply, and the clock matters even more.
The short version
- Confirm completion date → 180-day window.
- Book a language test if you applied for your study permit on/after Nov 1, 2024 (CLB 7 degrees / CLB 5 college).
- College grads: check the field-of-study list by CIP code.
- Expect 3 years (2+ yr program or any master's), otherwise up to program length; watch passport expiry.
- Apply before the study permit expires; full-time work is generally allowed while processing if eligible.
