Upwork’s own published range for freelance “AI or prompt engineers” is $35–$60 an hour.
At 160 billable hours, the top of that range grosses $9,600 a month, below $12K before fees, taxes, or a minute of unpaid sales time. The category also bundles AI engineers with prompt engineers, so pure prompt work likely sits at or below that range. I excluded one hiring vendor’s “$119–$185/hr US prompt engineer” rate because the same figures appear on its pages for AI engineer, NLP engineer, and other roles.
Key takeaways
- Fees and unpaid time Platform fee.
- Prompt engineer is not among them.
- That covers AI skills broadly, not prompt work.
Recheck rates and fees every six months.
