How to Open and Inspect CSV Files Without Excel

CSV files are still one of the simplest ways to exchange structured data.

Developers use them for database exports, analytics reports, API data, spreadsheet imports, logs, and moving data between different applications. The problem is that opening a CSV file is not always as convenient as opening an Excel spreadsheet.

You may not have Excel installed, you may only need to quickly inspect a file, or you may want to check the contents of a CSV without uploading it to an unknown third-party service.

Here are some practical ways to open and inspect CSV files.

1. Open the CSV with a spreadsheet application

The traditional option is Microsoft Excel, LibreOffice Calc, Google Sheets, or another spreadsheet application.

This works well when you need to edit the data, create formulas, or build charts.

However, for a quick inspection, installing or opening a full spreadsheet application can be unnecessary.

There can also be formatting and data-type issues when spreadsheet software automatically interprets values.

For example, a CSV might contain:

text
name,email,score
Alice,alice@example.com,95
Bob,bob@example.com,87
Charlie,charlie@example.com,91
name,email,score
Alice,alice@example.com,95
Bob,bob@example.com,87
Charlie,charlie@example.com,91
