Algorithmic Trading Software: Four Contracts, Pick the One You Mean

Almost every product sold under a long category name does one job well: execute rules a person wrote. You define conditions; it watches; when they occur it acts. The judgment happened once, at authoring time. Markets change and rules do not. Software with no grading loop has no way of noticing, because noticing was never its job.

Algorithmic trading software covers that contract and several others that get conflated in search. TradeAgentic is the agentic contract: observe, judge (including refuse), act under immutable limits, grade, including refusals, on a native desk you operate. For the agency definition in plain language, see what is agentic trading.

Four contracts (short taxonomy)

Name the purchase before you compare feature grids:

  1. Execution, route and manage orders; judgment lives elsewhere. Useful and incomplete as a “full stack” story.
  2. Rules, watch conditions; fire when true; judgment frozen at authoring time. Honest when sold as such.
  3. Research, backtest and simulate; not live authority unless you wire it carefully. Dangerous when a notebook becomes production by accident.
  4. Agentic, ongoing judgment, refusal, action, grading under constraints. Different diligence: artifacts for refusals, independent risk, broker-side protection.

Buying research while needing agentic, or buying rules while needing execution-only, is how disappointment gets billed monthly. The practitioner shopping order (runtime and protection first) is the companion framing for “algo” buyers on the same lander. This piece is the taxonomy so procurement language stays honest.

What buyers should require

  • Named contract: which of the four are you actually licensing? Make the vendor say it.
  • Independent pre-trade risk and broker-resident protection.
  • Kill switch, daily loss, concentration caps; no software override.
  • Artifacts: refusals and grades if the claim is agentic, otherwise you bought a label.
  • Restart/reconcile discipline before new risk.
  • Credential custody model you accept (local-first vs vendor cloud).
  • Enterprise needs (if any): roles, audit, support, not only retail screenshots.

Risk deep-dive: agentic trading risk controls.

A sober enterprise-readable test: can a non-salesperson walk you through a refusal, a limit hit, and a restart without opening a slide deck? If not, the contract is unclear.

How TradeAgentic maps to the taxonomy

TradeAgentic is agentic desk software, not a pure execution OMS and not a research-only notebook:

Native macOS/Windows; multi-strategy / one capital pool; pre-trade checks; argue against candidates; grade refusals; broker-resident stops; kill switch; daily loss; concentration caps; no discretionary override; equities/ETFs, options, crypto; user brokerage API; local-first; OS keychain; Consumer + Enterprise; not advice.

That is the contract to verify on paper before you care about any single strategy story. Strategy romance is cheap. Restart behavior is not.

How to keep taxonomy honest in procurement

Write the contract name into the evaluation sheet before demos: execution, rules, research, or agentic. Force every vendor claim to map to one row. When a deck says “AI algorithmic platform suite,” ask which of the four jobs are live in production today, and which are roadmap slides.

Then attach diligence that matches the row:

  • Execution: latency, cancel/replace, broker connectivity, ops runbooks.
  • Rules: authoring UX, versioning, who can edit live rules, kill paths.
  • Research: data quality, cost model, reproducibility on your hardware.
  • Agentic: refusal artifacts, grading, independent risk, broker-resident stops, immutable limits.

TradeAgentic belongs on the agentic row with desk packaging. Comparing it only on research charts against a backtest workshop is a category error. Comparing a rules engine to TradeAgentic on “number of indicators” is the same error in reverse. Pick the contract, then compare like with like.

Soft CTA discipline for taxonomy buyers

Once you name the contract, stop letting demos blur rows. If you need agentic, demand refusal grading and immutable risk in the first hour. If you need rules, demand versioning and kill paths, and do not pay an “AI” premium for frozen logic. TradeAgentic wants the agentic buyer who will verify artifacts; it is fine to lose the pure research buyer to a workshop tool, and fine to lose the pure execution buyer to an OMS. Category honesty is part of the brand voice: confident, plain, anti-hype, and specific about what the product is.

Primary URL stays the algorithmic trading software lander for both “algo” and “algorithmic” search paths; this article is the taxonomy lens on that same destination.

If you are writing internal documentation for a purchase decision, paste the four-contract table into the memo and circle one row. Attach TradeAgentic only if the circled row is agentic and the diligence artifacts (refusals, grades, broker-resident stops, immutable limits, local-first keys) are verified in paper. That discipline keeps “algorithmic trading software” from becoming a slogan that authorizes the wrong buy.

CTA

Open the lander, name the contract you need, then test TradeAgentic only if agentic plus hard risk is that contract. If you need rules-only, buy rules-only from someone honest about it, and still demand broker-resident stops.

FAQ

Why separate “algorithmic” from “agentic”?
Algorithmic is the broad family. Agentic is the subset that revisits judgment and grades refusals, not only executes frozen rules.

Do I need agentic software?
Only if you want continuous judgment under limits. If you have stable rules you maintain yourself, a rules engine may be enough.

Does TradeAgentic allow the model to override risk?
No. No discretionary override of hard limits.

Where do API keys live?
Local-first in the OS keychain on your machine.
