Pocket Ledger: A Local Receipt Sorter for Lazy Bookkeeping
This is a submission for the Hacktoberfest Open-Source AI Challenge Week 3: Slow and Steady
What I Built
Bookkeeping is one of those tasks that seems small until a month's worth of receipts piles up.
Pocket Ledger is a local-first receipt parser that turns messy receipt text into a structured, reviewable CSV. It's designed for freelancers, consultants, designers, and developers who want to spend less time manually entering expenses and more time doing the work they actually enjoy.
Users can paste receipt text or upload text files. Pocket Ledger extracts:
- Vendor — who received the payment.
- Date — when the transaction occurred.
- Amount — the expense value.
- Expense category — a suggested bookkeeping category.
- Review flags — fields that need human attention.
The idea is simple: automate the repetitive parts, surface uncertainty, and let the user make the final call.
Rather than pretending every receipt can be parsed perfectly, Pocket Ledger makes uncertain records visible so they can be reviewed before export.
