Experience has taught me that software development, and then personally, frontend design which is my specialization, is an expansive and daunting industry that requires the right approach to learning and execution. Without taking particular incremental steps, one runs the risk of giving up on learning programming too early or too easily. Now there are innumerable resources on the internet or on other platforms which can provide help to a beginner, but in the face of the massive wealth of resource, a structured plan is required for proper learning. This, for me, is where the HNG Internship programme comes to play.
I recently came across the HNG internship programme on Twitter and being a programme I’ve heard a lot about, my interest was immediately pricked. Although, I already have a good amount of knowledge and experience in frontend development, I didn’t begrudge myself to register. In fact, I mentioned the programme to a friend and encouraged him to register as well.
As with any programme, there should be an end goal so as to be able to quantify one's growth and progress, otherwise all is time wasted. Therefore, I have come up with my goals for joining the HNG internship programme.
My main goals for HNG Internship 8 are:
Knowledge Gain: The first and most obvious reason I am applying to join this programme is so I can become more knowledgeable in frontend design and expand the breadth of my know-how. This is also the reason I’ve chosen to stick with frontend development as I believe this programme will help me specialize in this field and tie up all my loose ends.
Skills and Depth: Apart from adding to my knowledge bank, I hope to gain more depth in the skills I already know and become a frontend developer who is known for delivering excellent products and whose attention to detail is top notch. I also hope to add new skills to my set to give me a more rounded ability as a frontend developer. I also want to work on my own personal workflow.
Practical Experience: One of the things I have heard about the HNG internship is how intense and practical it is. I believe this training would help me get hands on relevant projects that would instill more confidence into me as a software developer and help me establish myself in the industry. I hope to become a finalist in the programme with successfully delivered projects.
Asides from the goals I have outlined above, I have got another reason for wanting to join this programme. This reason though is the culmination of the aforementioned goals, it’s my end game. I hope that after this programme, I will have garnered the tools, skills and know-how necessary to become financially independent as a software developer. This could be through freelancing or taking up a regular paying job. I would like to try out these two approaches so I can gauge and then decide on what works for me going forward.
I would like to thank the Zuri team (https://zuri.team) for this wonderful opportunity and what impact they’ve made on and in the developer community especially in Nigeria. Also, if you would like to know more about the HNG internship and the stacks of development that are offered, kindly click on this link https://internship.zuri.team.
Here are some resources that I would recommend to an individual learning frontend development from the basics. Please keep in mind that these are foundational knowledge needed to get started, they are not all there is to frontend development.
