πΏ WildLens AI: Explore Wildlife, One Discovery at a Time
An open-source AI-powered wildlife exploration project built for the Hacktoberfest Open-Source AI Challenge β Week 1: Touch Grass.
This is my submission for the Hacktoberfest Open-Source AI Challenge Week 1: Touch Grass.
What I Built
WildLens AI is a wildlife exploration project designed to make discovering nature more engaging through artificial intelligence.
In a world where we spend so much time looking at screens, I wanted to build something that encourages people to step outside, observe their surroundings, and learn more about the wildlife around them.
Whether you're exploring a garden, visiting a park, walking along a nature trail, or simply curious about an animal you encounter, WildLens AI aims to turn that curiosity into an opportunity to learn.
The idea is simple: use AI as a bridge to the natural world, not as another reason to stay glued to a screen.
WildLens AI is intended for nature enthusiasts, students, wildlife observers, and anyone who wants to make outdoor exploration more educational and interactive.

The project is built around web technologies, with a focus on keeping the interface accessible and easy to use.
Feel free to explore the source code, suggest improvements, and contribute ideas that make wildlife exploration more engaging.
How I Built It
I built WildLens AI using HTML, CSS, and vanilla JavaScript, focusing on a browser-based experience without requiring a traditional frontend framework.
The main technologies include:
- HTML for the website's structure.
- CSS for the interface, layout, styling, and responsive design.
- Vanilla JavaScript for interactive functionality and application logic.
- Open-source AI as the intended foundation for wildlife-related intelligence and exploration features.
My goal was to create a practical project that combines web development with the potential of open-source artificial intelligence.
Rather than treating AI as the entire experience, the project focuses on using it to support a real-world activity: observing and learning about wildlife.
The source code and current implementation are available in the GitHub repository linked above.
Why Does Open Innovation Matter?
Open innovation matters because useful AI should not be limited to a small number of closed platforms or proprietary services.
For a project like WildLens AI, open-source AI offers several important possibilities:
- Transparency: Developers can inspect how the underlying technology works and understand its limitations.
- Flexibility: Open models can potentially be adapted or replaced as better wildlife-recognition models become available.
- Accessibility: Open-source tools can lower the barriers to experimentation for students, independent developers, and hobbyists.
- Privacy and control: With a suitable locally running model, image analysis can potentially happen on the user's device without sending wildlife photographs to an external AI service.
- Community-driven improvement: Other developers can contribute features, fix bugs, and help make the project more useful.
For this project, open innovation represents an opportunity to explore how AI can make learning about nature more accessible while keeping the implementation open to future improvements.
The broader vision is to build technology that encourages people to spend more time experiencing the world around them.
My Agent Session
I don't have a DevRelay agent-session link to share yet.
If I record a session documenting the development process, I'll add it here so others can follow the workflow and understand the decisions behind the project.

Building WildLens AI has been an opportunity to explore how AI and web development can come together around something beyond the screen.
My goal is to keep improving the project and make wildlife exploration a little more interactive, educational, and accessible.
Explore nature. Stay curious. Let technology bring you closer to the real world. π±
