GreenQuest AI : Less Scrolling, More Exploring — An Open-Source AI Outdoor Adventure Planner

This is a submission for the Hacktoberfest Open-Source AI Challenge Week 1: Touch Grass

🌿 GreenQuest AI: Less Scrolling, More Exploring

What I Built

GreenQuest AI is an outdoor adventure planner designed to encourage people to spend less time on their screens and more time exploring the real world.

Users can choose their mood, available time, location, and interests to discover simple outdoor activities. Whether someone wants to explore a garden, observe plants, listen to birds, or take a relaxing walk, GreenQuest helps turn free time into a small adventure.

Key Features

  • 🌱 Personalized outdoor activity suggestions
  • ⏱️ Activity durations of 10, 20, or 30 minutes
  • 🌳 Multiple outdoor location options
  • 🎨 Activities based on personal interests
  • ⏰ An outdoor countdown timer
  • 📱 A responsive interface for desktop and mobile

The main idea is simple: use technology to help people put technology away.

Code

GitHub Repository:https://github.com/uttkarshanidubey-rgb/GREENQUESTAI.git

The project uses three files:

  • index.html — website structure
  • style.css — visual design and responsive layout
  • script.js — activity generation and countdown timer

The website is built using HTML, CSS, and JavaScript.

How I Built It

I built GreenQuest AI using basic web technologies to keep the project simple, accessible, and easy to modify.

HTML provides the structure, CSS creates the nature-inspired design, and JavaScript handles the user's preferences, generates outdoor missions from predefined activities, and runs the countdown timer.

I chose this approach because I wanted to create a project that beginners could understand and improve.

Current implementation: The activity generator uses predefined activities rather than a genuine AI model. Integrating an open-weight model for personalized activity generation is the next step in making the project fully satisfy the challenge's open-source AI requirement.

Why Does Open Innovation Matter?

Open innovation makes it possible for developers to inspect, customize, and improve the tools they use instead of relying entirely on closed platforms.

For GreenQuest AI, open technologies provide a starting point for building a privacy-conscious outdoor assistant. The current version processes preferences locally in the browser and does not require an external AI API.

With an open-weight model integrated into the project, the application could generate more personalized activities while giving developers greater flexibility to change models and experiment with their behavior.

My goal is to explore how open AI can encourage real-world experiences rather than create another reason to remain online.

My Agent Session

Not available yet.

I may add an agent session after integrating and testing an AI model.

Prize Categories

To be confirmed based on the challenge's official partner categories and the technologies integrated into the final project.

Final Thoughts

GreenQuest AI started with one question:

What if technology helped us spend less time looking at a screen and more time looking at the world around us?

I want to keep improving this project by integrating open-weight AI, exploring offline capabilities, and adding more nature-based activities.

🌿 Step outside. Discover something real. Make every adventure count.
