Introducing OSyx — An Independent Operating System Built From Scratch
Hey DEV Community! 👋
I'd like to introduce OSyx, an open-source operating system being developed from scratch.
OSyx has its own kernel, desktop environment, filesystem support, and a growing Windows application compatibility layer.
Running on Real Hardware
One of our latest milestones is getting Zen Browser running on OSyx on a real laptop, not just inside QEMU.
This is a significant step toward running modern desktop applications on our own operating system.
What's Working?
- Custom kernel with preemptive multitasking
- PRISM compositor and AXIS desktop shell
- Windows PE32+ compatibility layer
- Ext4 filesystem support
- Networking, USB and HID
- Process management and multithreading
- Native userspace applications
What's Next?
We're focusing on improving Windows application compatibility, hardware support, performance, and system stability.
OSyx is still experimental, and there's a long road ahead.
Open Source & Community
OSyx is being developed with the assistance of AI coding agents, with ongoing testing and verification.
We're building an open-source project and welcome technical feedback, contributions, and discussions.
