i like the “Learn ___ the Hard Way” series by Zed Shaw. as a chemist who taught myself some Matlab in grad school, i hadn’t been exposed to a lot of the fundamentals of programming. Zed’s Python book introduced me to those fundamentals as well as the Python language. funny enough, it helped me write better Matlab code, too! it also gave me the confidence to learn other programming languages, like PHP and JS, by diving in and just building something. :)
